Illinois gold prospecting

I have been going crazy trying to get an idea in illinois(near chicago) or indiana were i can pan for gold. Any help would so much appreciated. Thanks.

Conservation cops in illinois have only 3 agendas. Most conservation cops there probably have no clue prospecting is off limits as theyre more focused on busting teenager drinking or smoking, fishing licenses, and poaching.
Not saying it isnt unlawful, just that prospecting is so extremely uncommon that its probably the dustiest statute in the rule book.

I get bothered less when out prospecting than I do when fishing.

i live in nw illinois. i might be wrong, but i think i read that any kind of gold prospecting in illinois is illegal, that the state owns all the mineral rights. so i guess if you do find gold, you are suppose to turn it into the state. in other words, go tattle on yourself.

I met a couple (GPAA Members) in the BH of SD from Wisconsin who said it is illegal to prospect and minerals deposits in Wisconsin. I has to do with a large gold find by a company that were mining another mineral. The State shut prospecting down after that.
