I'm a beginner, needing advice

Ive been interested in metal detecting for quite some time. Since the kids are now older, and the rat race of daily life has slowed. I've decided to pick up the hobby I've been interested in. I will be doing most of my searching along the Blue Ridge Mountains. I've gained access to quite a few pre civil war homesites. I want a detector, that will perform well in this terrain. And one that provides sufficient depth for the area I'll be searching in. It will be important that the detector is comfortable. I'm also kinda tall, 6'3". I don't want to be stooped over all day.

I (The Wife) doesn't want me to spend over $400 on my 1st detector. Since, your the pros on this subject. I will highly value your opinions.

Clemsonfan, My choice.... for you would be a Garrett or fisher. Mike from Woodland Detectors can better help. Digger from Calvin... BUNK... Bunker. Both post here. (try to keep the money local!) You will get MANY personal preferences touted here. The ultimate choice is yours. Do your homework and put time on it before closeting it. TTC

All detectors have adjustable rod lengths. You simply adjust it so that you're neither stooped over all day, nor too long so that you end up having to hold the detector out in front of you (putting all the weight on your arm) all day. Ie.: the right length so there's minimal weight on your arm (elbow is not bent) and so that you're not stooped.

The most preferable detector rods for this, are the ones that have the cam-lock type adjustments (as opposed to the button preset position types, or the types you have to rotate the thing to tighten down, etc...). Because with the speed-adjust cam-lock type, you can do instant in-field adjustments, for it you're working an incline/slope. Because, for example, if you're pointing up a slope, then you need to adjust the rod length shorter, and so forth.

I'm also a beginner, so I can't help you much with a recommendation on
specific brands and models for the Blue Ridge mountains, but I'm also
tall (6'6") and recently had a discussion in the Brands forum under Tesoro.
You might want to read that.

It's about the Silver uMax ("Micromax") model by Tesoro, but I think
Tesoro uses the same poles and handle for many of their models.
So the question of whether the pole is long enough should have the same
answer for all. I also learned that the other main manufacturers make a long
pole (sometimes called a tall man's pole) you can get instead of one of the
standard poles. One way or another, you should be able to adapt most
MDs to your height, but you're wise to investigate first to make sure.

Hey clemsonfan do yourself a favor do what ever it takes to get $100 more to make it $500 and get a Garrett AT Pro,it will be the only machine you will ever need.

you have expressed interest in the best hobby in the world, in my opinion. although you have said that you want a beginers detector, thats fine. hundreds will tell you the merits of their favorite machine. im not gonna. what i will advise is that you spend about $125/150 for a good digging tool and a good pinpointer. most good detectors tell you where a certain type of metal is, you have to get it. i like the wilcox all pro mod 300 digger, but my friend has got a lesche digger. a good pinpointer also makes the finding alot easier. my friends and i believe the best to be the garrett pro pointer. i couldn't imagine detecting without pinpointer or digger. even if you hate this hobby, those two items will be resellable for very minimal loss to you. but if you love it, these items will be indispensible to your many hours of fun and enjoyment. good luck and happy hunting david
