I'm new and which metal detector is the best?

I am new and I'm considering spending about a grand on the garrett gti 2500, my question is this:

How many of you wish you would have started with a higher end detector?

If you're after gold nuggets, forget the GTI2500. There is not one machine that will do it all. Gold nuggets is more of a specialty machine. There are some that will work decent for other aspects of detecting however. For strictly gold, I'd get a gold bug 2 for an area with tiny nuggets, a GPX5000 for larger and/or deeper nuggets, or the GPZZ7000 if you can stand the price tag. The AT Gold is a reasonable compromise with being waterproof as a nice bonus. It will also work good for coins and relics on land. It pretty much sucks for salt water ocean and wet sand however.
