Big storm rolled through Florida last night, 60kt winds so you know what that means. I've been waiting for the wind to die down and tides to be just right. I decided I'd go for a spin on my standup jet ski before going detecting.. had a great time until I fell doing a trick and broke my toe!
So I packed up the ski headed home. Grabbed my gear and told my wife Navy Seals don't stay home when they break toes! She said "You are not a Navy Seal". I told her to stop pointing out the obvious and headed to the beach. I was kinda surprised to see I was the only one there. Had someone beat me to it? I realized I forgot my flashlight so I would be hunting in the dark by feel.
Seeing lots of holes around but not sure if they were from other hunters, I found a nice 'heavy item' line higher up the bank than their holes and and followed it. I also made it a point to go away from the most crowded area of the beach thinking this area would be less hunted. Finally hit gold. I was totally positive this was fake because it was so badly tarnished and caked with shells, but it felt heavy and it rang up as a solid mid tone on my CZ with no bouncing. It was the deepest hole I'd dug all night. The more I scraped off it the more gold showed thru the tarnish. I hit it with a buffing wheel and sure enough it was gold underneath all that crud. It must have been there for a long long time because it's actually pitted. It's marked 14K inside. I guess there is small chance the stones are real. That would be my first find with real stones if they are real. Why would anyone put such small stones in there if they were fake is what I'm thinking.
Yeah it's kinda ugly (it's pretty beat up)
UPDATE: I got an XRay and it's confirmed. They want to put a cast on it. No way, I can't detect in the wet with a cast!
