Hi all!
I got a nicely intact parasol head, Probably the most popular 'Whatsit' :laughing7:
usually just the hub is found, this one had 14 inches of wood handle, most of it crumbled away on the ride home.
got a few small flat buttons, blank copper & an 86 Seated Dime.
I'm pleased with the small silvers that are turning up lately :hello2:
of course no hunt is complete without a spoon find.
Best digs to you all, I'm away for a couple days,
looking forward to seeing all your digs when I return!
HH,

Re: Best Parasol Piece yet !

That parasol piece is very cool! Are you going to try to preserve the wood?
Rest of your finds are extremely neat, too!

Thanks Creskol!
I have the piece in water for now, I found a beautiful Pestle from saltwater a while back, the wood shrank shrank incredibly and fell out of the head :'(
I don't know how togo about keeping the wood from shrinking :dontknow:
I won't be able to reply for a couple days, but any help would be appreciated :hello:

Re: Best Parasol Piece yet !

VERY GOOD .. Keep it wet for now! This is what I would recommend. Sorta pricey, but if you email or PM your address to me, I will ship you a small container of it, enough to treat that handle.

Re: Best Parasol Piece yet !

FYI .. I nominated this for banner, not because of its monetary value ( probably doesn't have much) but because as you say, it is "Probably the most popular 'Whatsit'" ever. Finding one in context is an outstanding and rather scarce find. While others may not agree that it is banner material, one can't deny that it is a great find.

Now that's a very cool find Herbie!! WTG & HH, Quindy.

Re: Best Parasol Piece yet !

Hello Herbie :hello:

Very interesting finds there! :o
Love the look of that parasol head!

It'll be interesting hunting this weekend with all the rain that's coming! :laughing7:

Dave

PS. Had to take my home computer in for service yesterday, we had virus on the hard-drive and they had to clear the memory. So, I've temporarily created this "new" account until we get our computer back tomorrow.

Take care,
Dave

Re: Best Parasol Piece yet !

Love to see pics of the spoon too. Looks pretty ornate.

And what about that 1886 Seated? Is it a half dime? Or do you have huge ... fingers?

Re: Best Parasol Piece yet !

Re: Best Parasol Piece yet !

Re: Best Parasol Piece yet !

Didn't make the banner, Will, but I think it is one of the neatest and one of most educationally significant finds posted in a while.

Re: Best Parasol Piece yet !

Thanks for all your replies ;D
Been away for a couple days, apologies for the delay in reply.
Appreciate that nomination Creskol :notworthy:
I have found a lot of these, some with just the hub, some with portions of the tube,
they mystified me for a while, apparently a very popular item in Victorian times.
The photo of the wood hardener reminded me I had a similar product in the shop,
Appreciate the offer to send me some ! I think what I have will do the trick
Just researched my product, for dry wood only! will PM you about that pentacryl.
Tuberale, it is a full dime with fat... fingers, the obverse is in worse condition so I didn't include the pic :laughing7:
Nice Victorian pic there Mike, That's a Gentleman. Thanks for posting!
Will be watching 'Whatsit' so I can help others who find those parasol hubs.
HH to all

Re: Best Parasol Piece yet !

I have had luck preserving wood by soaking it in 50% water and 50% elmer's glue over night, I take it out, wash off the excess and after it dries it has a nice look and it won't fall apart.
