There is a brand new app - CoinTrust - for testing gold and silver bullion coins available for iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch users (Android version will be available soon).

Verification of a coin is based on the unique sound (ping / ring) of each kind of coin. Simply choose your coin from the list, start recording, gently spin your coin on a hard surface and stop the recording. The result of the test will show on the screen.

It is probably the only non-invasive and cheap method for detecting debased gold/silver coins and tungsten-filled gold bullion.

See short tutorial movie:

In this moment CoinTrust can test the following coins:
1oz Krugerrand
silver Maple Leafs 1oz

If you've got them, do silver dollars, halves, and American gold coins - those are the ones turning up as counterfeit these days.

And, then I'll be loading the ap :)
