Hello All,

Since the weather was going to be decent yesterday (above freezing and not snowing or sleeting), I decided to meet up with Coinmaster2db for a bit in the afternoon to hunt for the Good Stuff. :)

He had an old spot that he wanted to try, in an area where there was a really old spring house in a cow pasture. Well, we met up and got digging. Here's a photo of the spring house. :o

We hunted for a bit, and dug a few keepers...then I got a really Fine signal and popped out a silver thimble (2nd one in Kentucky for me). That built a fire in us to see what else was there. Then I dug a tombac button, which was a great sign of the age of the place.

Pretty soon I got one of those Silver uMax Large Copper signals. ;D I called coinmaster over to enjoy the moment with me:

The coin looked a little small to me, so I was already thinking it might be a Braided Hair type--but when I got it home and cleaned it, there was another reason it was small...

Anyhow, we kept digging right until dark (about 3 hours), and it was a really fine haul for "The House Whisperer" and I. Lots of variety in the finds, and a few interesting surprises. I got a flat piece of bent-up metal that looked like a name plate, and when I carefully restored it it was indeed a name plate from a business in Indiana. When I dug the clover-shaped piece below, my first instinct was to run around in circles, dancing and yelling "Corps Badge!" (but it was not to be). The relic is cool though, but it is probably a decoration. Not too many things come out of the ground that are clover-shaped.

I also got a piece of the typical brass clock frame--but this one had the winding key in the back of it. So that's my first one of those, out of several dozen dug. :) The suspender clips were all of unusual manufacture. Also bagged a few musketballs and another large tombac button. Here is a photo of the finds before cleaning and restoration. The crumpled up name plate is in the middle, below the harmonica reed plate. I was happy that the restoration on that item turned out so well.

And after:

The clock frame with the key still attached:

The silver thimble. Quite a beauty. :icon_sunny:

And the Large Cent was an 1846. I am telling myself that the edges have crumbled away because of a defective planchet rather than 150 years of cow urine... She's not pretty, but she puts me 1 copper away from my 2009 goal of 20. :hello2:

If the weather holds later on in the week, I will try to get out again. Until then, Happy Hunting and Best Wishes.

Buckles, that's nice work.

In your first coin photo I see the copper in the center, but in upper right quadrant, I think I see a small coin like cresent with a minor tinge of copper green...... Am I hallucinating? Were there two coins in that shovel full?

Had to ask!

Guess it could be a small piece of leaf...........

Looks like another great hunt. I would have got a slight rush from that clover shaped decoration also. It almost looks similar to serpent side plate except threefold. I wish I was digging right now. It's been almost two weeks since my head has been filled with the beeps and chatter from the 1266. Kinda quiet around here. You will find numbers 20 and 21 yet. Looks like the weather is holding out.
Keep posting nice finds like this. It helps keep me away from that insane political forum! :tongue3:
Cheers,
Dave.

Dave,

Thank you for the kind words. I hope I'll be digging off and on all winter--but who knows. Sometimes I can hunt just about anytime from December through the end of February, and sometimes the ground is rock hard most of the time. I have dug only one serpent side plate, but it is a sizeable one--missing the "head." I was out with the my 1266 today for a while. No LC's, but I did get a few buttons and a nice complete ramrod channel, which I am quite pleased with. Stay away from that politics forum, buddy. It's trouble.

Congrats on #19 BB! I have no doubt after following your posts that #20 will be coming soon enough!! Looks like your finds span a few years that the spring house was there.

Merry Christmas!
Ironman

Merry Christmas to you too. :icon_thumleft: I hope there's still time for #20. The finds from this hunt were a bit unusual due to how broad a time span they were from. Most sites are either CW era to turn-of-the-century, 1840s to 1860s, or pre-1830s. Seems like very few of them span more than one of those time frames. But when they do, there is certainly a LOT to dig. :)

Another good post Will, glad to see you get the 19th one and hopefully the #20 goal coin will be found before end of year. Silver thimbles are a super nice find, wish I could find more of them, but guess the poor man sites I hunt is the reason for so few of them compared to normal ones..

I see there is now a 2009 Finds section posted, but hopefully both of us are not done yet for 2009..........

Don

Don, these are poor man sites here too. Two silver thimbles found out of close to 200 sites since I have been digging in KY. I am hoping for one more good hunt before the turn of the year.

By the way, what do you think about the chunks that are missing on that large cent? Ground damage or defective planchet? I have never dug or seen a LC posted that had that kind of damage. (There is a large "flake" missing from the reverse, too.)

Looks like a pretty good hunt! Way to get 'em in in between the bad weather!

Yeah--it makes us swing a little faster, eh? 8)

That's a nice thimble...I'm still looking for a silver one!

You will find one, Romeo. They can't hide from you forever. Have you seen one dug by a buddy on a hunt before?

BB,
Congrats on #19. Come on 20!!!
As far as, "Pretty soon I got one of those Silver uMax Large Copper signals." I've only been lucky enough to hear that signal once. :tongue3:
Love that silver thimble, and you did a great job on the name plate.
Congrats,
Doug

Doug,

Come on over here and we will get you your first Kentucky Copper. Thanks for the kudos on the name plate. It took a good bit of work to get everything bent back to its proper shape.

pepperj said:
Sweet looking thimble, are you going to restore it to it's former glory?

I have no experience bending silver back into shape, so I will probably leave it as-is. If I tried it, it might look worse than it does now. Maybe in 2010 I will find lots of bent-up old silver to experiement on. 8)

you know buckle boy, that made far better reading than the local paper :headbang: because ..a, it is something i am totally interested in and b..you put it together well...all the best from n/z...and crack a bottle on the 25th ..des

Des,

I like telling stories. And since I enjoy reading posts that read like a story or article, I try to do the same thing with what I write here. It's like a magazine, but more timely. :)

Way to go, Buck, on your 19th large copper for the season. You have been dominating the fields of KY like the Colts and Saints are dominating the NFL right now! :notworthy:

Before the year ends, you'll get your 20th copper with a piece of Spanish silver on the side! Go get 'em, Buck!

Kyle

Kyle, it's been a good year either way. This many LC's in a year in Kentucky is practically unheard-of. I was hoping for a really good relic to close out the year, but the complete ramrod channel I dug today may have to be it. :P Still a good find. HB's been finding all the Spanish this year. (But last year it was me, so I can't complain.)

Hope you guys get a break in the weather this winter.

Nice finds man.

I dug 3 or 4 of those name plates this yr. They were all folded up and destroyed. I was able to bend them all back out. They are nice relics. What is the deal though with trying to destroy them. Did they do this when the name changed? I wondered why they tried to make them not recognizable.

HH Jer

Those name plates seem to be really good quality brass. I wonder if folks just bent them out of habit before tossing them out--kinda like wadding scrap paper into a ball rather than just tossing it in the trash as-is... This one was folded with the letters turned towards the inside. Do you remember if the ones you found were folded to the inside as well?

Nice 19th..... Beautiful location, that reminds me of my grandfather's place in eastern Oregon. Behind the house, but it was
a dug into the side of a hill.....used as a cooler for milk, butter, apple cider, etc. And the snakes loved it. :(
Did I see a Chinese holed coin? If you could give me a closeup of the front and back, I would i.d. it for you.
Have you dug down into the hole? Have to be careful, but just might be a bunch of stuff under the dirt. And, don't forget
the sides of the place. My grandfather used the sides almost as much as he used the bottom of his spring house......keep us posted.

The discs with the square hole in the center are conchos. :) There is a local digger here who insists on calling them Chinese Coins--even through they are obviously conchos. I don't bother to correct him, since he is so set in his ways. I would really like to dig out the spring house. That would be a dirty, sloppy job--since the water still flows swiftly out.

Lol, this is the 4th time I've looked at this post, I can't stop looking at that cellar hole and drueling :laughing9: :laughing9: ... We don't have any around us being at sea level :'(

Wanna trade? I would love to hunt out in your area someday. :tongue3: Glad you enjoyed the post, my friend. You guys have been making some incredible finds lately.

Bill,

Good to hear from you. That was a piece of leaf in the photo. One day perhaps I will find the fabled pre-Civil War pocket spill, but it hasn't happened yet.

Cheers,

That cellar hole looks exciting. The silver thimble is nice even though it has been squished. Nice hunt and HH, Mike

The silver thimble is still on my list. Excellent find, BB. 8) GREAT hunting!

Nana

Nice finds Buckle Boy especially that 1846 large cent

Wow, that LC is interesting - never saw the edges of a coin chopped like that.

Silver thimble is nice - better than the aluminum one I found. :)

WTG, BB!!!

That's a great hunt for sure!

Like Watercolor, I'm hoping to find a silver thimble one day. That foundation is inviting - I'm glad you picked up #19!

It was fun getting out to dig with ya the other day. :icon_thumright: I hope I can get us a rehunt of that property. I've got another site from that era that I should be able to get us on. Glad you found #19. I only found 1 Large copper this year, but you get out there more than I do. The 1/2 cent I dug in Southern IN is the great equalizer. :laughing7:

A half cent from Southern IN is indeed worth a dozen KY coppers! Gimme a ring, coinmaster. We have to make plans for Sunday. Too bad the weather is so snowy and bad this weekend.
