So the area I was searching is the downstream creek-bed of an old grist mill and cotton gin built in 1824. Loads of awesome square nails of all sizes and even an axe head! My initial guess was maybe some sort of fastener? Or strapping mechanism? Any other thoughts or knowledge would be very appreciated!

Your welcome. If there is a shallow rock bottom area that crosses that stream
check that area, sometimes its a ford they used before there was a bridge.
You know you found one if you start finding broken horse shoes.
