Looks like every clad quarter that I have ever dug that was in the ground a few years, exposed to fertilizers and other chemicals! It is quite common and valued at twenty five cents...

Tory, It's a modern "Clad" quarter. They are of a copper core, plated with nickel, the nickel will very much discolor if in the ground for awhile. The last U.S. Quarters that were of Silver were 1964. Ahhh, as a paper boy way back when, I must of had ton's of silver coins on collection day, and never thought anything of it. No quarters made of Bronze though, but I will also add, I'd rather dig a modern state quarter, then digging another 25 zinc pennies.
