Yep... looks like one half of a late 19th or early 20th century two-piece dress buckle. The other piece would have been of the same design— i.e., a mirror image of this one, and the two would have joined at the narrow end, forming a sort of "butterfly" or "bowtie" shape.

I would have guessed it was a stylish hair clasp. But I have never seen one of those buckles described by PBK. Monty

I would have to agree with PBK, it does appear to be 1/2 of a 2 part buckle. Being so ornate I would put it at 100+ years old.

As I was conducting a detailed cleaning I noticed something. The area I pointed out in this picture has a piece of glass stuck/glued on it. That pink stuff seems to be glass chips and the curved line is pointing to a chunk of it. It sort of looks like lead crystal. I'll post a close up of it tomorrow.

Hi Daddytopcat.

So you say it should be looked at in this perspective. It looks like a bouquet of flowers and the back must have been lined with colored glass. The new picture shows a series of shots that shows the glass and how it was glued on. Now I’m confused. When I turn it over in this perspective the paten date is upside-down. But I can see what you say, as well as what PBK and others has said. What do you guys think now?

It's possible- if it were a bolo tie clasp, you would have been able to see the back since a bolo "ain't nothin' but a shoestring and a clasp".
Not my words, I heard that in a movie or on TV and thought it was funny. I've always looked at bolos differently since then. LOL

Do ladies ware bolo ties? And can any of you guys and gals see the flowers I'm talking about? If it was use as on a bolo tie it must have been used with a scarf not a shoestring.

There may indeed be bolo ties with ornate Victorian floral designs, but I've never seen one.

On the other hand, I've seen many Victorian ladies' two-piece buckles with such ornamentation.

If, as I believe, your find is one half of such a buckle, the complete buckle would have looked something like this. The diamond-shaped center piece may have held a glass "gem" or some other decorative inset (as shown on the third [bottom] buckle in Reply #10 above).
