I found this and need help identifying what it actually is. I'm unsure of the type of metal it's made of. Its heavier than a quarter and real close to the same thickness. There are only 2 visible inscriptions that I can see. One is (C.W.), stamped on both sides, and the other appears to be the head of a man or woman. The face is only visible on one side. I appreciate your help and thanks for looking. 20200131_210136.jpg 20200131_210627.jpg 20200131_210702.jpg 20200131_210823.jpg 20200131_210838.jpg 20200131_211041.jpg 20200131_211102.jpg

a great counterstamped coin
not sure if it's a known mark or just a maverick
very cool design around the letters
host coin looks like a smoothed over US large cent Matron head

Thanks ironhorse. I have never heard of counter stamped coins before. I wish there was a date that still existed on it to tell the age.

I've always enjoyed finding and seeing these
Being struck over a large cent almost makes me feel that it was used in the lifespan of large cents in the States, from that I would hazard a guess that it circulated to the mid to late 1850s maybe to the CW era

Not to hijack the OP's thread but since it has been solved I thought I would add my counter strike. It is a classic head half cent, either 1825 or 1835, the date is a little fuzzy. Funny thing about it is the letters are my first and second initials. I couldn't find this one in the list Bigcypresshunter provided.

Its a matron/cornet head US large cent. Minted from 1816-1839.

The CW is whats called a counter stamp. This was done by the public not the mint. People did it for many reasons. The most common were to advertise a business or a to keep as a personal souvenir (it could be their initials.)

Nkellam22. Thank you for your information also. I really appreciate all you guys helping out.

You’re only a couple months in and you’ve found a Bucketlister that many of us here have been searching a long time for! That is a very significant find, friend... Ddf
