I agree with Surf. It doesn't look like the quality of a true Shaker piece. It looks like the components are held together with nails or metal pins, the original Shaker furniture was pinned with wooden dowels.

I agree it could be new England shaker
I have one, but not as old as your chair
IM sure you have something of great interest and Possible value
There are many variations of shaker chairs, you need to put the time in and Google of research eBay
DO NOT let this chair - don't take any low ball offers
If I found this in a yard sale, would buy in a heart beat

Thanks, Brady! That's the thing -- this chair has been in my husband's family for a very long time. It may not show fine Shaker workmanship, but the family story is that it's a very old chair and that it has value. I've looked at eBay listings and done some Google research, but haven't yet seen anything like it. We won't get rid of it, though, until we have a better sense of what it is. I appreciate your feedback.
