Tonight I was finishing up on a job site in the middle of town. The snow has melted but the ground was still frozen. We were standing around talking before leaving and I was kicking some clumps of dirt when this popped out. I was like no way! No flakes nothing anywhere else. This whole area is developed. I have a feeling it is old but have nothing to associate it with. I do not know the material but is has a small crystal inclusion in it. Has a good bit on the base and the edges are ground on the sides.
Thanks for looking.

what a find. sometimes we get lucky and it was your turn. Archaic at least, my safe guess. lol

It was just crazy how I found it. Not looking at all and someplace I would never even consider. That is what makes this hobby so fun to me.

Nice find. Looks like a flint celt or adze. Hope the snow melts this weekend.

Go back and kick more dirt around! Nice find.

Nice save TNMNTS...surprised the dirt clumps weren't frozen solid...glad you didn't break a toe...cool find!

I'd call it an adze myself and a dang nice one ;) it's funny I've found some things on the job sites with no sign or nothing and then find one piece haha . You found it because you were looking .

...that's pretty super Tn...like a handful of history! Good things happen to good people....like you ....had to give you a "blue" one because of the cold down your way...be careful & keep warm!

Thanks everyone. I am always happy to kick one up. It is true. I think that all of us have the eye for them. Plus it is fun to share with like minds.Hopefully we will get back to normal which around here seems to be high water.

Nice Tn here in maine that would probably be a preform.I do not know what you folks' adzes look like. But here they are slender with a more defined narrower bit end. Here are a couple illinois adzes...Showing a more slender overall shape.

I believe it is an adze because I don't think it could of been thinned down any further to make a point it looks kinda thick for its width and length . It was probably shortened from use and resharpening . Those adzes you posted are some beauties by the way ;)

Cool find... Is it uni-face? Just looks like a chunky scraper to me.. But since you mentioned a bit and ground sides I figure it looks like a small woodworking tool to you that's a neat one for sure found in a cool way

Not sure Painter its kinda small. Might have had thoughts of being more but they hit some wicked steps on it and might have used it for a scraper or something. I think they wanted more out of it but could not get it? They took the time to rough the edges which tells me they wanted to work it some more.
Here are a few rough adzes that I find. The one in question is on the end of my fingers. :dontknow:

Look at this step they ran into. I tried to shoot it where you could see it not sure it will work.

I see what your saying they needed through run that flake all the way on that piece in question and just ran out of space to get it any thinner . I have recently been learning how to knap as so to get a better understanding. GB suggested I did and I'm glad he did so it helps with a lot . Those are all cool pieces in my book and would look nice in a frame.

Nice examples Painter. It raises the question of preforms. Is a pre form just right before notching then??If that is the case then I have a bucket of adzes.

Seems ever picture I post turns sideways? ???
