It's shitake time!

Here's a nicely fruiting oak log from a number that my brother and I inoculated with shitake spores a couple of years ago.
Each log produces a crop every few months
Delicious!

Oooo - shi- take mushrooms are GREAT! And expensive to buy, around here. And, mushrooms have no calories (the butter does )

I'd like to do something like that. How long does the log last, and where (and how often) do you have to get new spores?

Here's how you grow #$%^takes at home!
First, you have to order inoculated plugs from a mushroom farm. I believe my brother ordered these from a place in Tenn that sells them mail order.The plugs are small wooden pieces that have been drilled out of a log containing the fungus.
Then you cut a set of oak logs 4-6" in diameter, and 2-3 ft in length. You drill holes in the logs the same depth and diameter as the plugs, tap the plugs gently into the logs, and cover them with hot wax(provided in the kit he bought). The plugs are spaced about 8 inches apart in the log. The log is now inoculated with the mushroom fungus.
You pile the logs up in a shady spot(important), water them every week or so(important), and wait. The fungus will grow throughout the log, eating the wood as it grows.
I think we got out first small crop about 6-7 months after inoculation. It is amazing to watch the mushrooms spring right out of the wood, practically overnight .After 24-48 hours they reach full size and should be harvested immediately.
After two years, each successive harvest has been larger than the one before. Supposedly they will produce for about 4 years, by which point the fungus will have eaten most of the wood, and will need to be transferred to new logs
And they are delicious!

That really sounds like a fun project Bling!

I think they do portobellos in racehorse exhaust around here.

Wonder if morels could be grown in a controlled environment?
