It's tiny and it's stamped CS. What is it?

Found at a sidewalk tearout in Winchester, VA. I have no idea what it is, but the fact that it's stamped CS is interesting to me. War related or not?

That's really cool! What's it made of?

No idea - it's nonmagnetic and rang in around where lead and copper do....but then again so do screwcaps, so I dunno.

A person would sure be inclined to think it's war related. Hope someone has the answer, soon, inquiring minds want to know.

It looks like lead. Perhaps it is carved. I have a good bit of carved lead, those guys could get real creative. Great find!!:occasion14:
If it was mine, I would scratch the bottom edge to see what it is made of

Ditto, I was thinking the same thing. A simple scratch test would determine brass, lead or iron based? Actually, you should be able to discern lead without a scratch test just on the soft nature of lead versus other metals.

Well, I guess I misled people in the title by accident now that I look at it. It's not "stamped" CS...the CS is raised. I can't see anybody carving that neatly because the letters are flawless....it looks like a font. Either machine done or something that was poured in a mold. On the bottom there's a small raised ring, barely discernible. On the side there's what appears to be a seam the whole way around, and it's a perfect cylinder. None of that screams carved to me, especially compared to other carved stuff I've seen.

CS is the same upside down in reverse so is it possible it was a stamp for sealing envelopes?

:icon_scratch: No, it's not. The "S" would be backwards even upside down.

0.27" is pretty small diameter.

Anything around he rim look like wire edges? Here a seal that uses a 0.25" slug and has a die that can have a letter or two embossed to make a personalized seal.

What does it weigh? Perhaps a weight for calibrating a small scale.

to thick to be a lead seal, also, the imprint would happen after it was crimped
wouldn't be a brake cable end if there's no indication of a cable
IMO - Brady

Just a wild shot in the dark. An ID plug for a wooden item, as in a rifle stock etc...
