New Wrinkle On Avoiding Jury Duty

In no uncertain terms, a Montana man tells judge why he won't serve

APRIL 30--There are probably better ways to avoid jury duty than the approach recently taken by a Montana man. After Erik Slye, 36, received a jury notice earlier this year, he filed a notarized affidavit seeking to be excused from serving on a District Court panel in Gallatin County. Slye's caustic affidavit, which he prepared with help from his wife Jennifer, can be found below. The document, of course, did not sit well with court officials and led a judge to threaten to jail Slye. But after being summoned to court, Slye apologized for the affidavit and avoided being cited on a criminal failure to appear rap. And he also was excused from serving on a jury.

Same trick I use Bob. If you look like a street person or a half insane ex cop, no way they'll let you serve.

One of my Dad's contemporaries , a fellow farmer , being polled to impanel a jury in the early summer responded to a question from the prosecuting attorney ,"Let's just hang the SOB , I got hay to put up !"
He was fined $50 for contempt of court and released from further jury duty until the harvest season was over

md I had a smart ethnic look at me in the one time I got called into the court room, He said No way with that old redneck!!!!!! I got off . showing up in uniform will do it too. B

I just tell them that from what I have read in the paper that it looks like he is guilty as sin.
Only was called one time to serve, gave the above, never been called since.
Wore my VFW Jacket with Served in Vietnam ball cap--think that helped too.

Unfortunately very few of the "Normal" people are ever allowed to serve, thanks to Judges who like to legislate from the bench and Liberal lawyers who all too often will rule a person out because they are a conservative or an ex cop or if you attend church on a regular basis. All these thing that they come up with now days to remove you from the Jury pool is what made us a nation of peers before. Now we are a nation of prejudices because of what they say we will do or think.

After being called up 12 times for jury duty over the years, I finally got nailed and had to sit on a jury. Now I'm sure I'll get called for a trial every time from now on. (They always pick the people who actually show up for JD. Never hear about the cops busting people who don't show up. I don't think that's fair. But I would love to sit on a jury to hear the excuses people have for not showing up for JD. That would be a fast trial.... )

I just tell the Judge "I am indispensible at work."
The Judge said "No you aren't."
and I said "But your honor, I sure would hate for them to find out."
He excused me.

they wanted to seat me on a murder trial --- the one driver had "ratted" out on the other two who shot and killed two folks and serious wounded the other two in the car --leaving thinking they were dead *--- it was 2 couples that had come from a rich hotel guest area on amelia island --these 3 thug'd tailed en --waited till they stopped at a stop sign -- then 2 of them ran up to the car with guns drawn demanding money and jewelry --then the 2 gunman shot them all in cold blood to leave no liiving eye witness----(or so they thought)-- ( the 2 folks in the rear survived but were very badly hurt in the deed) -- once caught the 3td man the "driver" sang like a bird on the 2 shooters -- as they were trying to seat the "jury"for the "driver / snitch" they asked if anyone has "issues" with "pleas deals" ---- I know the jury doesn't have to accept "their" deal -- and I said yes I do -- we the jury are not here to just "rubber stamp" your backroom deals to get this bum to snitch to make your jobs easier to do. ---you guys should have got the evidance and put all 3 on death row ---wellafter I said that --- I've never been asked back to serve on a jury since them -- can't figger out why.

lol....makes ya wonder what kinda trial it is Vibes...after this post.

You know how the lawyers will go through all the people they've called in for Jury Duty and ask, "is there any reason why any of you think that you shouldnt be picked for this trial?"

The last one i got called in for was for a High School Music Teacher, here, who was caught with child pornography on his computer. He also had pictures of the high school girls behinds and none of them even knew that he was zooming in on them with a camera taking pictures.

The lawyers asked that question,"is there any reason why you shouldnt be picked?" I raised my hand and said, "Take my name off." he said, "We cant take your name off mam" I said, "Erase it then, cuz if i get picked i'm gonna try my best to send him to the pen!"

A black lady sitting in front of me raised her hand and said, "Yall wouldnt have to worry about this if he'd done that to my child! We'd be having a funeral instead of a trial!"

If we hadnt of been in the court room at the time she said that, we would have all given her a standing ovation! lol
