Just one hour, but still 'Real'ly good

Went back to the spot that gave up 12 silver yesterday. A sore/raw hand combined with the heat made me want to leave after just an hour. The hour I was there was productive, but I was hoping to get one more silver on the day to make 50 for June and July. I know that I could have found that one more silver had I felt like staying, but I was just too drained.

The two pieces of silver that I did find, though, were pretty good. These were both DEEP as well. These were "dig a plug, then dig a plug within your plug, then go down another inch or two before the probe will pick it up" deep.

I will be going back there after some rains replenish the grounds.

5 Wheats, mostly crudy
1900 Indian Head - Smooshed a bit
1897 Guatemala 1 Real - .835 silver
1905S Barber Dime

Guatemala won its independence from Spain in 1821. Then a succession of military governments began in 1871, according to a google search. I wonder why the 1897 coin would commemorate those dates... maybe somone else can fill-in-the-blanks. Nice find! TTC

Central American history is complicated, even more complicated for us because it isn't taught to us in world history in school.

The back of the coin is still the coat of arms for Guatemala. The front of the coin commemorates when Guatemala went through many changes to modernize the country under Gen. Barrios. He wanted to unite Central America as one country but was killed a few years later I believe in battle by a sniper in El Salvador. I have been to the spot that has a historical marker saying that he was shot there. I am currently down there right now and asked some of the workers here a little of the history. Their explanation would have filled up 3 pages of text (good information but none of us would have understood it because we don't know about it).

Of course we could get a better explanation from someone who is from Guatemala.

I hope this information helps.

Thanks for the info jpotter!

And thanks to everyone else who commented on my finds!

Good luck to all!

Nice finds,

That's the first type of real I've seen come up. I think it was a common thing to carry money over from other parts of the country when people came to the us in the early 1900's and earlier. I've found some weird old one's in my days also.

Great finds! I've got to get me one of those Excalibur's or Explorer's. Must feel nice to get stuff too deep for others.

Yeah, I always enjoy the unique foreign silver coins. Usually I only find canadian silver when I do. This was a nice change of pace.

I always enjoy your posts, great stuff. Heat's killing me, but I sweated through four or five hours of it today. My hands have been toughened up over the years, but my arm and back still suffer. Keep on diggin'. I'm diggin' it!

Thanks!

My hands are usually fine, but 8 hours the other day combined with deep digging and hard and sometimes rocky ground were not very forgiving to me. :)
