Just wonderin', anybody encountered something like this?

I found this on my property in Licking County Ohio (about an hour away from Flint Ridge, Ohio). Over my years here I have uncovered many small arrowheads (some intact... some not), but nothing this large until now. It is large & weighs about 5 lbs. Any guidance will be much appreciated. Thanks.

It's a very nice quarry blank. Instead of walking/canoeing over to the Flint Ridge quarries and carrying back a large block of flint that might have internal cracks and flaws, the natives would knock off some flakes and carry back usable pieces like that.

I'd get a piece of rebar (or a bottle probe) and probe around the area, there might be a couple more where you found that one.

I believe it`s a quarry blank, when they wanted to make an arrowhead or knife they would knock a nice flake off and knap it.
It was selected because of the purity of the material, carried back to camp it was a ready source of good lithic material.
Nice find.

Sorry didn`t read down, Joshuaream is right on the money with this one.

Spall core I have been calling them and a super sweet find Jayd I wonder if they also might have served as trade goods with other tribes.

Thanks for that pic.how would I get appraisers like that for my collection of arrow heads.collection of only 15 ( that were not broke from tilling)and found all in my back yard near and around the lrg.piece that I showed.also some rocks shaped kinda round with indent around middle.

Here is where i sent my pics. Not sure if they are the best out there, but for a nominal fee they will let you know what you have. To save cash, post them here, these guys really know their stuff and can pretty much always I.d. your items down to type, material region and sometimes I think they could tell you the native that lost it!

the round stones with a dent near the middle sounds like bola stones to me

It looks to be worked too much to be a blank.

Agree it looks too worked... large hide scraper is a real interesting option.

I agree that it is a tool and not a blank. It could be an axe or a hoe but I feel it is to large for a hide scraper. Most of your typical scrapers fit in the hand for control and the other hand would be stretching the hide-I guess it could be done with a two person operation. Scraping and preparing hides was mostly done by the woman and that would be on bad "A$$" woman to scrape with that. If you have ever cleaned a hide you would know the amound of scrapes it takes and it is a ton!

Thts a nice find, rather large. Its a 'chopper' . Think of it as an ancient butcher knife. You may want to search the area more thoroughly. It may have been a kill site.

well i hate to disagree with the masses but that is a blank, they would wear themselves out using that to scrape hides

It's possible that big blanks/tools like these serving as a good flake knife maker. Say your flake knife wears out or what ever, knock off a flake and walla. It's speculated that those massive clovis points & clovis platters also served the same purpose back in paleo times.
