Hello All!

So the day after "Kentucky Diggers, Volume I," we got up early (like, 5 a.m.) to beat the heat, and went coin huntin at the same site. We hit a hotspot and I got my chance to skunk Rodeo Recon a little in return for the previous hunt at the same site. I got in a little hotspot and dug three silver dimes out of the ground in about 15 minutes. I had my good friend Steve with me too, and I put my back-up detector in his hands and he dug his first silver as well!! The amazing thing about this site is that the overall number of wheats from both short hunts was LESS than the number of silver dimes--all Mercuries.

So then it got warm outside and we hopped in the car and went to another Civil War spot around there. (Different spot from "Volume I.") We got under the shade of a HUGE oak tree for a while. Can you see the ACE 250 in this photo?? It has a camo modification tailored specially by Rodeo (to hide that repugnantly LOUD yellow color).

We started out in the field--and I'm glad we did!!! We found an area where troops must have fired off hundreds of rounds into a little hill. (Target practice, I assume???) We dug almost thirty minieballs and cleaner bullets (all fired) in that first hour!!! That works out to a bullet every FOUR MINUTES!!! They were so close that we'd just have to widen a hole each time to recover them! In some cases, there were three or four in a dig-hole!!

We then retreated into the woods, and I believe we actually walked OUT of the camp. Finds started to thin out dramatically. Then all of a sudden we started digging up old flat buttons! Rodeo found a great buckle in the same site (small buckle in the photo below). So I thought that perhaps such old finds were a sign that we had walked into a COLONIAL site! The finds petered out, and we continued to pound the area in search of old coppers and silver. We didn't hit coppers like we'd hoped, but we did find a few more flat buttons and some round lead.

My dad was in town so he came out with us to hunt that day:

Will this was a STELLAR day for you! This reminds me of the days I had back in the Spring when I found a abandoned Confederate Redoubt. My God brother, this is what I am talking about. To the relic hunter who loves history in the form of Civil War relics and old coinage this was a CREAM OF THE CROP day!!!! ;) I sure love when I have days like this. Kentucky is still giving up some nice ground I definitely see!! Good research good finds.

WOW! I need to come up here in the Finds section more often!

Awesome stuff you dug there Buckleman!

Hi Buckleman
Thanks for the great photo's of the things you found. You certainly find a lot of spent lead when you hunt over there. Love the silver coins, they just give you such a buzz when they show.
cheers davidco

Good deal there Buckleboy. There has to be some more good stuff there. Great day with a friend!

I get a buzz from the silver, yeah. But I also get a big buzzzzzz from CW lead :)

Thats a great haul of lead - there must still be heaps of potential at that site - good luck with it.

I think there is a lot of potential at this site. Truth is, we haven't been back to it since August...we have other good sites that are much closer by (Seated Dime site, for example). Besides, what really gets me stoked is finding CW dropped bullets. I just don't get as much out of the fired ones. Perhaps that is because I think one could dig several hundred bullets out of that area where the target practice was. I spent an hour or two out there time before last and got 78 fired minies and cleaner bullets--dug a hole three feet deep and five feet long before I stopped getting signals in the bottom of it. I guess the soil has gradually slumped down that hillside... I usually don't care to post the fired ones, unless I get a whole mess of them.

Will,

You going back to this site? Keep the forum updated on this project.

Yes, I'll certainly be going back... the only question is when. Since I know that I can find lots of fired minies there, I'll probably wait until I've had a skunk hunt trying to find a camp or picket post. It's gonna happen eventually--happens to us all sooner or later. Then I'll probably go back to this relic site and dig some minies and lick my wounds LOL. The coin site, I'm afraid, is about cashed out. I have been working that site for several years, and I occasionally find spots that I've neglected that hold some more old coins. I like doing some coinhunting on all-day hunts--keeps a little variety.
