I gave my daughter my BH Lonestar for a birthday gift. She just turned 9 years old. I took her out to the park today. I had my 7 year old son using my BH Pioneer 505. I was using (learning) my new Tesoro Deleon. Wouldn't you know that little joker (Anthony) found a ring!! I haven't even found a ring yet!! He also found a game token that is used at a local bowling alley called "Don Carters".
We also found 4 cents and 4 dimes and a quarter. Also a matchbox car hood.
I think I have them hooked. I actually got my son to understand how to read the detector and what was trash and likely pulltabs etc. I was really proud of them. :)

Cool....It happens to the best of us.Was it his first time?
beginners luck always ring true. :)

Shane:
You've got some history there with the Don Carter token.
He was a show stopper on late 50s early 60s TV.
Here are some of his 'FIRSTS':

First bowler to win every major tournament

First athlete to sign a $1 million promotional contract

First bowler to have a PBA tournament named for him

First bowler selected for the Madison Square Garden Hall of Fame

First active bowler to be named to the Billiard and Bowling Institute of America's Hall of Fame

First 800 series on TV (809) on "National Bowling Champions"

First to "Make That Spare" on network television. (the 6-7-8-10; for $18,000)
To give you an idea of how strong a draw Carter was, take a look at this site; in the paragraph about Arnold Palmer, Joe Namath and Richard Petty.

Great find.
Don........

Yes it was the first time he has held a metal detector. And i thought Don Carters was just a local place. Is it a chain? Thanks for all the info. on Don Carter! :)

What a great day for you, and ,your children! MD'ing is such a great way to spend family time together! WTG.

Shane:
After Carter retired in the early 1970s, he could no longer bowl because of his bad knees but did stay in the business side of bowling. He owned several alleys in St. Louis and other cities, and later founded, with partners, Don Carter Bowling Centers. Located in several states in the sun belt, there were fourteen centers by the mid-1990s. Though the company had problems in the late 1990s, it was reorganized and seven Don Carter Bowling Centers remained by 2002.

Sounds like you guys had a ball today. So great to hear you are getting the kids involved in a good clean hobby! I know they will be hooked for life!

Great getting the kids involved...maybe you should be using the Pioneer and give the boy the new Tesoro... ;D

Having fun with the kids is what it's all about and great finds are nice too!

Shane, it was a beautiful day to be out with the children. They're learning quick!!! Finding a ring 1st time out is really great...Congrats, Anthony!!

The name Don Carter is not ringing a bell with me. Bet the token came from "The Circle Bowl"...heck, I don't even know where a bowling alley would be at in Baton Rouge now. The old one was at the circle Airline/Florida...I think there's a Olive Garden in that spot now.

Great finds, great kids, great day...you had it all.

;) RR

Hey River Rat the Don Carters Bowling alley is on airline hwy. across from Old Hammond. There also used to be one at airline and plank. I dont know if either is still in operation though. Yes it was a wonderful day to be out. The kids had a great time and Angela layed on a blanket and watched. I had burried a hole where we dug a coin and our minature dushand Ella Sue dug it back up! So the next time I started to dig I called her over and she helped dig a coin! It was so funny. I think these breeds were once used to tunnel or chase rats or something if I'm not mistaken. She sure was determined to help. I found a gold chain friday but Angela says it is just plated :( She also explained to me that there are no markings on the clasp so its "fake". A start at any rate. Thanks everyone for the nice replies! :)
