Hey everyone

been out of touch for quit a while with all the honey dews and all.

I was reading a article on gold panning and how some people got frustrated on crystals in the gold pans and read that these may be diamonds and came from kimberlite and not knowing threw them away, and in this article was a picture that look very much like the stuff we found as kids.

My brother and I remembered a out cropping of stuff we found as kids and now 40+ years later

I was curious see if I can pop a couple of pics in here.

..I don't mind being the first to say Thanks for posting! I love Kiberlite (and diamonds, as does the Mrs.) So please find a nice chunk loaded with carbon ...for the Mrs. of course...

Well those pieces look sawed?
Hard to say, would need a real close up of the crystals you think are diamonds.

So that is what Kimberlite looks like..........

There is a well documented pipe not far from me, think I'll go check it out might be fun and I am definitely going to get me a specimen.

Yes one piece is sawed , I had a friend with a lapidary saw cut 4 sides.
and one side cut a great view of the crystal within , the other piece is raw chunk.
Just got back last night from gold panning a old aluvial placer mine.

My brother and me got a lot of color and in the my brothers pan he had some very large garnets or ?
so heavy they stayed with the gold.

Even with a rock saw a diamond would be hellish to cut, due to its hardness.
That though also depends on where it would cut as the hardness is different depending on direction!

The saw blade is coated with small diamonds.. So it would struggle!

A close up would help greatly, however it does not really look like the typical diamond crystal...
Though that to is not a guarantee.

I believe I've read that garnets come associated with Kimberlites. How valuable are the garnets?

Depends on which kind of garnet, the name garnet refers to a whole group of minerals.
Some are cheap - others are very high end collector stuff.

I have another question. Apparently one can file a Federal mining claim on a Kimberlite. So if someone already has an oil and gas lease which includes hydrocarbons then does that supersede a mining claim? Would it depend on who was there first?

That I do not know. Would have to ask a US citizen that.

It would be just my luck to saw a piece of kimberlite and ruin the blade by hitting a diamond.....................

bookcliff, I am pretty sure that the oil and gas lease would not cover hard minerals. The laws vary from state to state and I would think that the lease would have to name off all minerals that would be included in the lease.
