This summer has completely sucked in terms of good finds, but that was nearly made up for tonight at a new permission I got at a huge house that has some Civil War history nearby. I only got one good target and just about didn't dig it. The ground is rock hard and I got a 12-46/47 reading at about 6" jumping to 12" with some junk signal in there too. I got down to about 4" and was barely getting a hit on my pinpointer at high sensitivity so I covered it back over and walked away. Something made me go back a few minutes later because I didn't know if I'd get a chance to come back and it was almost dark. Man, I'm glad I did!
My question now.... it's pretty banged up but is in phenomenal shape compared to my only other KG (II) I dug about a year and a half ago. The area where the date is located is damaged, but I can make out a 7 as the third number and I'm 99% sure the following number is a 6 under good lighting and a good lens. It doesn't show up for crap in my phone pics, but it's definitely there.
I don't know much about colonial coinage. Is this a penny or halfpenny? How do you know? I tried looking some things up but I got lost in the diversity of coins from that general era.
