I found this in the front yard of an early 1800's house. It appears to be a knife but the style has me questioning that logic and wondering if it is a door part or decoration.

If it is a knife does anyone know the approximate date?

The handle end has holes in it like for attaching a handle. Were throwing knives made a hundred years ago? Current family has been in the house since the 1930's. It was maybe 7" down.

Throwing knives of that pattern/shape were popular in the early/mid nineteen-seventies.
The cheaper ones were quite soft and were easy to bend and straighten.
Handles were wrapped with 1/4-3/8 inch wide (approx.) leather.

The Colonials are only slightly better quality than all the repops made over the years. That one if not marked is a fairly recent. As mentioned before, they are cheaply made and bend easily and usually have wrapped leather handles. I think I have a match down in the barn if I could find it. They're made specifically for throwing. While they are pointy they don't really have a sharp blade.

It is a really cheap modern throwing knife, likely made in Japan 1960s-yesterday. They were often cheaply painted in different colors and came in sets of three. Real circus or professional throwing knives are quite stout and well made, usually with slab handles of wood, fiber, or micarta and are usually marked with manufacturer's name. No way was it made before WW2.

I bought a set of three throwing knives like that from the Johnson Smith Company, in around 1972. There was a thin leather strap wrapped around the handle. Never could learn to throw them and make them stick in anything.
