I dug this just outside of the fence of an old farm cemetery dates on stones 1790s to 1890s. it was 8" down I thought it was brass at first but I scratched the bottom and it is pewter or lead in color the thin brass piece on its left was still on the remains of the iron shaft sticking out of it. it reminds me of an old gas valve but the nearest structure was half a mile away and I did not find any other junk. I keep thinking it is grave/funeral related but who knows?

many of the graves no longer have markers, could this be part of some kind of early marker? Is there any way to put an age to it based on the fact that it is pewter and not brass?
