Re: large cent with george washington on face

Alfred Jones and Sons of Bangor, Maine were merchants selling goods from as far back as the 1870 through... ? See this advertisement from 1912:

PS: Finnan Haddy = Smoked or Cured Haddock

Potentially you found a token, or, the seal to a container. If you think it's a coin it's most likely a token made from a coin?

Please post pictures for more help...

Also, if it IS a george Washington cent, it's possibly from the 1780s (ish)...

Rulau & Fuld's book, Medallic Portraits of Washington, lists this store card as ca. 1912 with a question mark after the date. There are three varieties listed - one with the reverse legend on an outline of a fish fillet, one with "no fish outline around the legend", and one the same as the first, except "Jones' name not on fish". They show catalog values of $15 in Very Fine and $25 in Extra Fine for the first, $20 in Extra Fine for the second, and $15 in Very Good for the third. The third value was evidently from a 1998 auction.

Re: large cent with george washington on face

I learn something new on this forum all the time!

Finnan Haddie - now that line in the song "My Heart Belongs to Daddy" finally makes sense to me:

"If I invite a boy one night
To dine on my fine Finnan Haddie
I just adore his askin' for more
But my heart belongs to Daddy." ;D :icon_thumright:

Thanks!

I would guess this is a VERY RARE Token. They probably gave these out as trade tokens for merchandise at the store. I have no idea about the age but if the Montana Jim is correct the earliest it could be is 1870 but still trade tokens are very hard to find and anything with George Washington on it from the 1800's brings even more interest to the piece. Great Find!!!

I should have read the whole thread before I replied. It sounds like your token matches up to what Idahotokens wrote. Looks like it matches the first description "Fish Fillet Outline on reverse w/ Jones written on it" with the $25 value in Extra Fine. I can't believe they are valued so low. I would never sell that token it is Awesome!!
