Last Finds of 2010 and First Finds of 2011... Found Gen. Sherman's 1861 Camp!!

Hello all,

I've been really busy for the last week or so hunting a new spot that my hunting buddy and I found in Central Kentucky. We were originally looking for an old house site that he knew was out in this field. After an hour or so, we found no sign of the house so we decided to cross the next field to our back-up spot, a Civil War fort. On our way across the next field my buddy found a .69 cal. musket ball! At almost the same time, I found one as well! We figured we had run across a picket post that was guarding the railroad tracks leading to the fort. We hunted the area hard and ended up finding about thirty .69 round balls each. As it was getting dark, we spread out and found another spot (about 100 feet away) that had a large concentration of round balls. Between the two of us, we took home about a hundred .69's and a hand full of smaller .30 caliber round balls, many of which were found within inches of the larger balls (probably buck and ball cartridges). Anyway, we had to call it a night but decided to come back the next day and hunt some more. That hunt gave up a bunch more .69's, a couple of Minies, and an Eagle button. Yet again, we decided to come back for another hunt on New Years Day and got another pocket full of relics. My hunting buddy even found and awesome Eagle "R" button and I found my first Flying Eagle cent, and cartridge box finial!! By the end of this hunt, the finds were getting few and far between. We went back again yesterday and only found a couple of 69's and I found a small jewelry piece, two Colt bullets, and a double-ended pistol bullet.

After four days of hunting we found more than 200 musket balls (some chewed, pulled, and carved), a bunch of melted "camp lead", 6 Minie Balls, two buttons, two finials, two brass buckles, two colt bullets, one double-ended bullet, one coin, and one silver plated jewelry piece.

We figured the site had to be part of General Sherman's September 1861 camp, because of the large amount of early war finds. He camped his 4,000 troops somewhere near town, and this would seem to be a logical place for them to be. We are going back to get permission for another field that is near by, because we have reason to believe that it contains more of the same relics.

Thanks for looking and HH!

Fox

Great finds and pictures Foxhound , looks like a lot of CW lead still left to be found :icon_thumleft:

Nice CW finds! I'm sure just detecting there would be a thrill. Any huts in the area, they would be fun to dig out. HH, Mike

Nice recoveries Fox. I see a few Sharps and the Willians Cleaner insert mixed in. You guys were lucky as virgin sites like that one where a good volume of CW relics can be found are very scarce these days. WTG, Quindy.

Thanks for the replies everyone!

Blind Squirrel: Camp lead is little bits and pieces of lead that were spilled while the soldiers were casting bullets. It's one of the tell-tale signs of a camp site.

You are correct Fox. Most Union troops had their bullets and premeasured powder in quick load form. The paper contained the bullet/powder load. Have you seen CW soldiers in the movies bite the end off the paper, pour powder in the barrel and use the ram rod to seat the bullet before putting the cap on the nipple? They used the powder to help light fires in camps during wet weather. Since the powder was then used up, they discarded the bullet in or near the fire. That's why you find melted bullets. By the number of round .69 cal. balls in this early war site, most of the troops there had been issued the old smooth bore Springfield muskets like the Model 1816. Here's a pic of 11 lbs. of camp lead and fired bullets not good enough to display that I have dug over the years. HH, Quindy.

That's quite a pile of lead Quindy. How many sites did all that come from?

We went back to the camp today and I found an AWESOME piece of history. I'm going to make a different post with the details.

Thanks and HH!

Fox, I have kept all the junk lead since I began hunting over 15 years ago. I'm sure I have given away 2 or 3 pounds of fired or damaged bullets (not good enough to display) to kids and friends plus that pic was made a while back. I'd say 15+ sites were invoved. I'm looking forward to reading your future posts. I'm sure that it has occurred to you that your RR siter could bve a CS Camp instead of Sherman's??? We find Eagle buttons and Sharps bullets in Morgan CSA camps too. HH, Quindy.
