Last Finds of 2010 and First Finds of 2011... Found Gen. Sherman's 1861 Camp!!
Hello all,
I've been really busy for the last week or so hunting a new spot that my hunting buddy and I found in Central Kentucky. We were originally looking for an old house site that he knew was out in this field. After an hour or so, we found no sign of the house so we decided to cross the next field to our back-up spot, a Civil War fort. On our way across the next field my buddy found a .69 cal. musket ball! At almost the same time, I found one as well! We figured we had run across a picket post that was guarding the railroad tracks leading to the fort. We hunted the area hard and ended up finding about thirty .69 round balls each. As it was getting dark, we spread out and found another spot (about 100 feet away) that had a large concentration of round balls. Between the two of us, we took home about a hundred .69's and a hand full of smaller .30 caliber round balls, many of which were found within inches of the larger balls (probably buck and ball cartridges). Anyway, we had to call it a night but decided to come back the next day and hunt some more. That hunt gave up a bunch more .69's, a couple of Minies, and an Eagle button. Yet again, we decided to come back for another hunt on New Years Day and got another pocket full of relics. My hunting buddy even found and awesome Eagle "R" button and I found my first Flying Eagle cent, and cartridge box finial!! By the end of this hunt, the finds were getting few and far between. We went back again yesterday and only found a couple of 69's and I found a small jewelry piece, two Colt bullets, and a double-ended pistol bullet.
After four days of hunting we found more than 200 musket balls (some chewed, pulled, and carved), a bunch of melted "camp lead", 6 Minie Balls, two buttons, two finials, two brass buckles, two colt bullets, one double-ended bullet, one coin, and one silver plated jewelry piece.
We figured the site had to be part of General Sherman's September 1861 camp, because of the large amount of early war finds. He camped his 4,000 troops somewhere near town, and this would seem to be a logical place for them to be. We are going back to get permission for another field that is near by, because we have reason to believe that it contains more of the same relics.
Thanks for looking and HH!
