Hello all and a happy new year, Just like to show you the last artifact of 2007. It's a Celtic woad grinder base, I found it at the end of Dec 07. I sold it recently on ebay, it's about 55mm long.

Good hunting for the new year.
Robert.

Seeing as our history for metal artifacts goes back about 300 years, pretty sure none of us know what a Celtic woad grinder is! I would have tossed it out. Guess if you MD in England you need to know history and artifacts pretty well. How much did it sell for?

Nice to have a find like that. Even nicer to sell it on Ebay. WTG. ;D

As you know the Bull/Cow was sacred in Cetlic believes so it makes sense they put it on an object they used ritually, either before battle or for religious activity.

(for those that don't know) Woad is a yellow flowered planted which which when they crushed the stem it produced a blue die which they painted on their face before battle or other hallucinogenic activities. cica 100BC-100AD

I have found 1 base & 1 grinder in the same field, not a matching pair though. They were plain not like your nice Bull/Cow head.

EXCELLENT END TO 2007

just a guess but kinda looks like the metal part when you tap the tree for sap . when you are makeing maple syrup ,or other syrups .

just thought id trow that out there

Hello all , Yes Crusader is correct it sold for £108.97, what's your view on selling finds. Financially our ancestors have got me out of some scrapes over the years. I remember a Christmas many years ago when my family would have had no presents if a saxon had not been careless with his coins.

In answer to your question:

I hardly ever sell anything I find, I'm too attached to them;
However I do the follow;
Sell at a reduce price or even free to those who have specially asked or have a particular historic interest.
Sold the odd Musket ball as I have hundreds.
Saving Copper & lead scrap to sell.

If you want to know how I feel about those who sell artefacts & coins the answer is as long as they do it responsibly (includes showing the farmer & not getting involved with night hawking). I am keen that provanance is kept & in the case of rare finds like Celtic or Saxon coins they should be recorded with the Celtic Coin Index & the EMC at Fitzwilliam museum. (can be done by email, I have addresses if you wish?) - THIS IS IMPORTANT FOR THE GREAT KNOWLEDGE & RESEARCH OF THESE COINS.

I use my knowledge to buy & sell other peoples artefacts, this pays for my collection which is due to be published. Therefore I believe that private collectors & the antiquities market is a healthy thing done correctly.

If you need the money, wish to sell & you are happy what can anyone say but 'good on you'!
