I like this find it's got character. These lead plates were used to teach children the alphabet in the 17th Century. They are called "horn books" because they were originally made from horn.Note there is no U in the alphabet. Although it's badly bent it's an amazing bit of educational history.

Hi Buckleboy, Yes it's the only one, found it about 10 years ago in Nottinghamshire on a ploughed field that turned up lots of 17th Century material.Shame about the damage and I dont think it would straighten.

Cool find! And thanks for the history lesson. I've never heard of such a thing but it sounds like a good idea.

I bet some poor kid felt the sting of the cane for losing it, though... :whip2:
