I went a hunting today and found quite a bit of variety. These are all hoes mostly pieces Bits and Handles. I got 1 good one witch is the Tan one. That is one big hoe and she was heavy. It must of took a strong woman to use this one. The others are made out of a softer material maybe Slate. I usually leave these to the side of the field but I figured I would show them this time so the new people can see what they look like. Most look like a big flat rock. HH everyone, rock

Looks like some big, dirty hoes to me! Since you brought up this topic, I'm wondering if hoes can be made of quartz too? I found a large, quartz rock a few years back in an unusual place. Two sides are smoothed flat and it's really heavy too. That seems weird to me b/c quartz usually breaks with sharp edges. Even if it isn't some kind of tool or artifact it's still a pretty rock.

Or the wind or the sun or the rain

Is this "The Emperor's New Clothes" here now or what?

I cant believe you guys dont like the hoes. I know they are crude. Ill just put them back to the edge of the field on my next trip out. Now you see why I usually just leave them out there. They didnt make them pretty here. You should check out what Woodland Hoes look like in the books for Georgia then you will know.

Rock you know I'll stand up when I feel a wrong call has been made. I think you have some nice old hoes there. I'd make a flower bed or something to use them in. They are, regardless of what anyone says primitive tools. I find them also. I have noticed these finds are normally found in a spot near the size of today's garden. After finding these year after year in similar areas it becomes obvious that they are crude tools. I finally found a museum that recognizes crude tools found by archeologist that recognized crude tools. Here are a few of mine. People will laugh, but, the joke isn't on us, Rock. Remember that. Also, I've learned the hard way, people only want to see stuff that glitters, for that is gold.

Now that you have found and recognize the crude ones, you will find the nice polished ones. Probability says you will find a grooved piece near the crude finds. Probability didn't lie to me!

I have found 1 nice one out there, not too much plow damage on it. Its either a Hoe or a hand ax. I like the tan one but it is still pretty crude.

The tan piece was found along the islands once occupied by the Occoneechee people. In documents on the islands they mention hoes made of a layered stone. No scientific name, just layered stone. Here are a couple.

I didnt mean yours, I meant mine. I can see them (yours) as being hoes. The last pic on the bottom right looks to be a nice example with some damage at the bit and a stem for hafting.

Also, I've learned the hard way, people only want to see stuff that glitters, for that is gold.

I've learned that on an artifact board, people want to see actual artifacts. A lot of people who have a lot to offer quit contributing to artifact forums when the membership tolerates geofacts as artifacts.

It's a geographic dilemma. Take Larson for instance. He finds the most beautiful things anyone could dream of finding. The natives up his way had the stuff to work with. I'm sure some crude work was done, but so much nice looking stuff is found in an abundance, why bother with the crude? Around here, lithic is not as nice and the crude work stands out. Many finds here are hardly worked from their natural state but do have visible wear on them. I don't want this to sound snotty, so, please do not take this wrong. But, do you think the pieces with little alteration and heavy signs of use should be excluded? Excluded from the form, excluded from recognition as an artifact, or both? I'm seriously asking. I know these crude pieces have no monetary value, but honestly, neither does my best find.

Here's what the Hoes look like in my area. They too can be kind of crude, but some of are also very well made and very highly polished from use.

You have some super sweet hoes Reap. I also see some crude boys in the back of your display case. I wander why they ever took time to make a nice pretty hoe, if the old crude ones did the job. Nice collection!

Very nice examples Reap. I really dont keep the hoes due to they just aint pretty. Most of the ones I posted are broken from the plow. Only 1 actually shows a notch and it is broken in half. The one in the frame is the nicest hoe I have found yet and it is still quite ugly. I guess for digging in the dirt they werent too picky on what they used.

I have posted many things to learn they were not artifacts I am good with that. How I learned to have thick skin and keep a soft heart. Rock I do not think the one in your hand is a hoe. It would never do the job. The others may have been but have a lot of plow damage and are broke. Good news is that you have a good new area :hello2: Here is the best hoe I have ever seen and I have a few. This one is not mine.

Nice hoe TN. On Rocks piece, it may come to no surprise but I think it is a crude hoe. They came in various shapes and sizes.
