my dad dug up an area right off of our porch so he could plant an herb garden. i went over it with my detector and probe, hoping to find something good. i gave up after about 45 minutes and many nails from the roof being fixed a while back. i also found car parts (my dad is a mechanic who worked in our driveway fixing cars)... i got tired of hunting and figured i would only find more nails. :tard: :tongue3:

That's the time to break out a super small coil and snipe the heck out of it.

Don't give up. Have you hunted around any large old trees, or areas where they may have had their clothes line in the old days?
If your in an old house, you'll find some nice stuff soon. Good luck.

Try the clothes line area, lots of stuff falls out of pockets. Good Luck and don't ever give up!

hey pookie girl, keep trying. iv'e hunted 24 years and still get discouraged some times. last night after work we walked to a conv. store .5 miles down in the vill. to have a cool drink. found a quarter and 2 pennies in the parking lot. i thought, my day, went home, grabbed the magic stick. i only had a half hour till dark but found 1 wheatie, i zincoln and a clad dime plus the usual caps and tabs and....... i just looked out my window and i see there is some nocturnal critter that metal detects too. 2 of my plugs were dug out! that little piggy!

That's what I've been digging up on several old sites this season--square nails. I've got a bumper crop. But as a veteran DFXer named Bama Dave said (and this applies to modern roofing nails / alum. slaw too), once you extract a lot of the junk, you'll be able to "see" the good targets.
