I'm starting to get a lot more silver in my finds. Really lifts your spirits
Also, I think I did about the meanest thing I have done in a while to a guy, took an extra half hour lunch to do it too...
Went a credit union bank with only one teller and asked her if she had any halves or large dollar coins (I always keep one with me to show), she asked why I wanted them and I told her I was a coin collector. She tells me that I wouldn't find anything worth collecting in their bank.
Apparently at that bank there is guy who is "friends with one of the male tellers" that owns a coin shop who comes to pick up and dump off halves at the same time every Friday for his lunch break at around 2pm. Worst part he sharpies the edges of all of the halves that he dumps (she showed me some) so he knows he won't be getting his old ones back.
She agreed that the guy was a jerk, it was around 1:40 (my last few banks) so we decided to play a funny joke. I went to my car and took out $4 in mixed 64-69 halves with the darkest rims I could find. I also took a sharpie and marked the edges of a few of the cleaner ones. She mixed them in with about $10 of his sharpie rims and set them on her tray. I took out my LSAT book and started studying.
This Union Bank had one of those security doors that you have to be buzzed in with, so when he arrived I had plenty of time to save my page and make sure I was already talking before he got behind me. She was the only teller, we were the only customers. The guy was carrying about $100 in CWR's.
So I go up, and act like this is a weekly event for me.
"Hey, I'm sorry I missed you last week <insert small talk here>. Did you guys get any more of those half dollars?"
"Yes, I made sure to save some of them for you; why do you like keeping the old ones anyways?"
"Well I love collecting the older ones (flipping through the coins), like this 1964 one here (pulling out the 64) this was the first year they made this kind of coin. Every time I buy these black marked ones I usually find at least a few good ones to keep."
It was at that point that she pointed him out and said he was the one who dumps them, so I turned around smiled and thanked him. I also separated the 8 halves into my other hand so he could see them, I would have shook his hand if he wasn't carrying his dumps.
"You helped me add so much to my collection, I really appreciate it sir. I just cant thank you enough. If your planning on selling those coins I would gladly pay you for them right now."
His reply: "I actually still have to go through these coins, sorry"
I wasn't going to question why he brought in halves he wasn't going to turn in. But I now know what suppressed rage looks like...
He wouldn't stop looking at me while I paid the teller for them, thanked her by her first name, said I would see her next week and was buzzed out the door. While I was waiting at the second door to buzz I could see him making the occasional glance towards me.
I now have an arch-nemesis. I think I might do it again next week.
