I sent an email asking if Metal Detecting was allowed on the island. I'm guessing the reply to my email will just be "NO", but you never know unless you ask.

Couldn't you have looked up the park (island or whatever) list of rules, muni codes, etc... to see if there were something addressing metal detectors? Ie.: To see if it was/is listed as a prohibition? And if not ..... then, there you go.

Because you're right: Whomever gets tasked with answering your question, will of course take the easy answer.

No. The Island is all privately owned and there is professional archaeology in progress.
