Maps maps maps

Hello fellow TNETers, I'm hoping for a bit of input.
What are your tips or tricks when using maps to generate hunting spots?

The most common one I know of is to locate a structure on an older map then compare that map with a newer map to see if that structure is still there..

What are some of the more interesting methods you use?

I have old topos and Sanborn Fire Maps. I look for abandoned roads, abandoned railroads, parks, picnic grounds, ballgrounds. CW battle maps for rural areas that are still rural and not built on. Old highway maps for the old roadside parks / rest areas on the 2 lane highways where people would stop to rest and eat a snack. These were spaced about 15 to 20 miles apart, and back before all of fast food places popped up travellers would pack sandwiches and iced-down drinks to eat while on long driving trips.
