Me and Goio were attacked today by a theif trying to rob us!!!!

We went to our normal hunting spot in a Chicago public park like any other day. Everything was cool.
I found a 1920 Merc, that is the end of my 71 day silver coin drought so I was happy.

I was detecting when I saw Goio saying something to me. I took off my headphones,
when I saw a young guy maybe 16 - 20 years old throw a bottle at him. It missed him, but not by much.
The guy was like 15 feet away from us. I guess Goio was diging a plug when the first bottle came sailing
right passed his head. Everytime he threw a bottle he tried to rush up on us. He prolly thought we would
drop our detectors and he could run up and grab it. Well he got really close like 10 feet from me and whipped
another bottle at me, I saw it coming right for my head so I blocked it with my forearm. Just as before he tried
to rush me. This time I raised my shovel up and said "I'm gonna cut your %$&*@# head off!!!" well he took 1
step forward then ran off. He had another buddy off like 100 feet or so. Prolly ready to call his boys if anything
happened to him.

I wish I could of got my hands on him, I would of messed him up good. But my luck, he prolly is underage and I
would go to jail!!! He was whipping those bottels hard like he played baseball or some thing. The bottle that hit me
didn't blowup on impact, it bounced off. But now I have a big lump on my forearm, but that better than a broken
nose!!!! God I hate thiefs. The thing that bothers me most is that he tried to smash a bottle on Goios head when
he wasn't expecting it. Coward!!!! I atleast knew that a bottle was coming at me.

Oh yea, we still have all of our gear - he got nothing from us.

Crazy story, Glad to see it came out that way!

There are some areas that I hunt near some swimming holes that I will not wear headphones for that reason.

Way to defend yourself. And that is why I usually hunt with a buddy. Time to take a concieled* carry permit class.

Nice coin too and glad you guys made it out ok. I would use my detector as a weapon vs loss it to one but I also carry a short shovel..

Sorry to hear about your bad experience. Probably just as well you didn't catch the guy. There are more wacko's out there than anyone would think (If any wacko is reading this - sorry!).

On a lighter note, did you save the bottle? You could display the Merc with the bottle and have a good tale to tell about it.

Lots of people on the forums seem to use those big over the ear headphones. I like using a good set of walkman type phones that just have the foam earpieces on my ears. I can still hear the soft threshhold sounds, but they don't block my ears so I can hear what's going on around me. That's especially helpful in some areas. Glad you and Goio are OK.

Sorry about the bad experience.  That is messed up that people try to take what is not theirs.  I believe in that thing of lobbing off the hands for thievery.  

Your experience is why I try to go with a buddy.  I don't like to carry with me when I'm detecting, plus I can't enter the water with a weapon.  

Be careful the next time out, these two crack heads may still be there, it might be their hang out.  If you see them again call the police, don't dirty your hands on such garbage.  

By the way for land hunting,  I carry now an old German folding shovel.  It weighs about 10 pounds and in itself is a good weapon.  It will take down a bison.

At least there was the nice merc to make up for the incident.

glad everything worked out in your favor i kinda wish you Had of gotten your hands on him.. i allmost always keep one of my ears uncovered for that reason and if it had been me i would have been on a chase weather he is under age or not he'd be going to jail sore he wouldn't have liked being dragged across a park with cuffs on. you should maybe get some pepper spray trust me it works like 98% of the time.

Glad you all didn't get hurt bad or robbed man. That's the precise reason I never hunt with full headphones. I always keep one ear clear and open. I'd like to get a hold on those clowns one solid time and crack their fkng craniums. Good luck and HH!

Next time you and your friend are out hunting together, I suggest that you face each other when you are digging a target. That way you can see if someone is sneaking up on either of ya. When you are hunting by yourself on a sunny day, take note of which way the shadows fall, hunt so that if someone is sneaking up on you, the shadow falls in front of you, from behind. Been using this method for years.......Not GE

A lot of the guys in my club (which reminds me I need to pay my dues) here in the Charlotte area pack heat all the time.
I'd hate like all get out to shoot somebody, but I ain't gonna stand and let somebody lob bottles at me. If a bottle broke on you and severed an artery, you could bleed to death in a matter of minutes. I believe I'd either come "heavy" next time or stay away from that park. I'm glad it wasn't any worse than it was.

TreasureFiend, I'm glad you didn't get seriously injured. Your unfortunate day in the park will make other detectorists here be more aware of their surroundings the next time we go out. Sometimes I get too caught up in recovering my finds...someone could come right up on me and I wouldn't know/hear it. I think I will be carrying additional self defense when I go out now, whether I'm by myself or with someone else.

Congrats on finally ending your silver drought, and I'm glad it didn't end as worse as it could easily of had.
