Hello all,
I was randomly checking out likely sites hoping to find a honeyhole.
Of all the broken articles I've recovered, this is the one I most wish were complete.
It is part of a copper alloy Medallion, rounded bottom, straight sides.
38 mm wide, depicting what I think is a British or Dutch soldier with sword and pike
over a kneeling supplicant.
The soldiers garb have me thinking 16th Century.
Though of course this doesn't mean the piece is that age.
I have searched for a while through some pages, I am hoping that the T-net sleuths
will come through with something on this, maybe a date and country from the uniform. will move to whatsit if we can't come up with anything here.
Other finds, An broken pewter "spatula" ?, a lead '1/2 ounce measure' that weighs 66 grams :icon_scratch:
Maybe an unfinished piece, the bottom is rough pebbled casting.
Another Large military round, this a .50 cal. at 5-3/4" length,
I believe I've found .50s before with smaller casings, is this a standard or a special AA round?
two large tombacs. an 'Anhk' symbol broken off a ring, backmark 'Jesus 925' ??
Don't recall the anhk being connected to Christianity.
A large brass piece with Masonic symbol and a name.
is this a cemetary piece? (not found near any cemetary) If so, I will certainly inquire at the local cemetaries for this name.
a few modern coins, including 2 zinc cents, quite uncommon finds for me :o
and a possum jawbone which of course I cleaned with my toothbrush.
A satisfying hunt for me with a few oldies ;D
thanks for looking & Great Digs to everyone

Re: I Wish... Broken Medallion, possibly 16th Century

Your .50 was made by the Frankfort Arsenal in Philidelphia PA in 1941. If I'm seeing it right, it looks like theres just an empty hole where the primer should be and no flash hole into the cartridge, which would make it a dummy round. They were used to teach soldiers how to load an operate the Browning machine gun. It should be filled with sand to give it the proper weight.

Ammo like that with no color on the tip would be standard steel core general purpose rounds.

Nice days finds there!

Thanks Ken!
I looked up 'Dummy Rounds' and that's what it is.
Under the black patches it has 3 holes near the center of the shell, and the missing primer. Great ID ;D
That is one very large round for anti personell use :o

Agreed, I shouldn't have suggested only British/Dutch, he appears to be in European military garb from the age of exploration/conquest, 16th Century.
Those poofy shorts & tights :laughing7:

Re: I Wish... Broken Medallion, possibly 16th Century

Nice digs Herbie! :icon_thumright: I just tore through my red book because for a sec I thought you had a piece of a Libertas Americana medal!

Thanks All!
Sic semper tyranis or something,
The ones I've seen have a toga clad Roman soldier over a lying body.
Medals from the Spanish war are also somewhat similar,
neither display that 1500s style garb

Thanks JW15!
I was unaware of the existence of this medal.
What a beautiful piece,
I love Franklins description of his vision here:

humm dutch explorers were in that area * and they wore outfits similar in design to that --- local natives "submitting" to the dutch explorers ? --- new york once upon a time was called "new amsterdam" you know --

Excellent variety of finds! I hope you can find a match for the medallion.

Nana :hello:

That medallion would have me wondering..

COLUMBUS WEARING 'PANTALOONS" holding a sword downward and and "claiming america" from the natives -- might be part of a 1892 " columbian exposition" medal or similar medal  :icon_thumright:--theres a 2 cent stamp found by big cy that shows the basic soldier (columbus in soldier dress) design * in "the landing of columbus" 2 cent stamp.

1492 /1892 --400 years --it was a "big thing" --lots of trinkets and medals made .

Indeed Ivan, I now believe it is From the exhibition.
Condition is consistent with turn of the century find.
thousands of different tokens were made by sponsors, vendors and manufacturers.
I am thinking this one may be an actual award rather than a souvenier.
As I have stated, The shape will be key in Identification.
