bird band I agree with, but pigeon, no way. This ring is a bit larger than the duck bands I have gotten off of mallards I shot. It would fall of the foot of most birds. I was thinking goose or turkey, but didn't know the PDA banded birds. That is usually a federally funded activity.

..so I had a brain fart and couldn't come up with "bird band" .. but the last time I checked, pigeons were birds, too!

If Large I agree not Pigeon.
plus most Pigeon bands have the date sideways
Or the Initials of the Pigeon club.
like IF For international Federation of pigeon fanceiers
or AU for American Racing Pigeon Union
or just initials of owner & Hatch date of Pigeon
I Doubt it's 171887 meaning Jan 7 1887 by looks.
Aluminum ?

I Wonder if HB is Harrisburg

Can't find PDA Listings for any birds

here are what Pigeon bands look like

creskol, didn't mean to offend, was simply trying to say that it is too large for a pigeon's leg.

Jeff, yes, i have a few pigeon bands from the ones I blasted out of the barn as well, LOL. It seems to be aluminum, much different than any of my federal bird bands. The edges aren't rolled and dulled like bird bands usually are to keep the fowl from cutting their leg. Some type of tree tag might be possible. I am going to email the PDA and see if anyone there can answer it for me.

thanks!

TRIKI, that was pretty funny :icon_thumright:

Thanks for the info, I have emailed the PDA, so we'll see if they can dig up any history on it. More info to come hopefully soon!

Not much help, but I found a pigeon leg band once and it was from a local club way back in 1929. The club no longer exists and no records were found of the bird owner. I still wonder about it. Not worth anything but it's a neat find never the less. Do they band animal's legs at all or just birds. Looks like a furred animal would eventually chew it off or damage it badly? Just wondering. Closed bands are found on birds which have been banded as babies. This usually means that they are captive bred. They are slipped over the feet when young. The bands are permanent.

Open bands are normally found on wild caught birds. These open bands are used on older birds whose feet are too large for banding with a closed band. Your band appears to be this type (open).

Unless its for something other than a bird. :dontknow: I would think if it was removed from a tree, it would not be connected. Was it still connected when found? That would make me think that whatever it was has died. (duh) :D

Here is an example of different bird sizes.

I found this on wild caught imported birds. I dont know if it helps. :dontknow: http://www.birdmag.com/birdbands.htm If you have a bird with an open wire ring import band, you should be able to trace the band by calling the USDA. (301) 734-5097 You may surprised at the information you receive.
