Today was an adventure, it started out with me stopping by a friend's house to pick up some survey paperwork, he told me he would leave it on his front porch on top of his mailbox. I went to the house, and no paperwork. I sat in my truck for a bit and then decided to check his side porch. As I walked there a lady comes from the backyard, I explained to the stranger what I was looking for and she said "Ah, you want the house next door" !!! What a way to start off the day, rather embarrassing, and yes the paperwork was in plain sight sticking out of his mailbox..............
With that starting off my pingin day, I should have known it would be no ordinary day. I started hunting the millsite, and got the beautiful suspender right away. I believe this is a very old type and it has very nice design on it. I am putting together a display case of just old suspender clips. Later on I got a nice design button and I decided it was time to venture a bit further into the woods in hopes of another old coin. As I got about a block in from where my truck was parked, I looked up and there were three men walking towards me! Now, I was in underbrush and these guys were in long sleeve dress shirts with ties and lo and behold the third one was in a Police uniform.
They walked up to me as I turned off my detector and introduced themselves as NJ State Police! Uh OH.........
It seems that since I have been going to this site since March about 10 times now, that one of the nearby residents wondered what was going on and called the police thinking I might be tending to a Marijuana field or something like that.
The police were very nice, we exchanged some small talk, since my son is a cop and I showed them my finds and they said have a nice day and off they went. Hope they did not get any ticks!
I did manage a photo of them leaving,
(attached).
After they left I hunted a bit more, and got a whatisit, maybe a part of a gun, I don't know, and probably never will, but I decided enough excitement for one day and called it quits.
I got to within 25 feet of my truck and I thought, hey, I never detected the mill race nor the small remaining section of the dambreast of the mill. I went down to it, very close to the stream and on one of the slopes of the millrace I got a nice coin reading. About 8 inches down I got another Large Cent!
It is an bent, buckled 1851 Large Cent, by far the newest coin found there, perhaps associated by someone post mill site time who lived at a nearby farm on the other side of the stream. I have found one relic post CW in the same area earlier this spring, a beautiful gilted Eagle button.
So, it was a good day pingin, a little embarrassment, encounter with State Police and some relics and my 10th Large Cent for 2007. Not bad.
That is is for the first half of 2007. It has been a slightly above average 6 months for me and if the fall is half as good it will be a banner year for finds..................
