In a word-Yes.You can also go into all-metal mode and hunt iron if you want.
The best of both worlds.HH Joe

The Excal doesn't turn off iron, it ignores it. Course if the target is larger iron it will respond because it is more conductive. What the Iron Mask feature does is allow the Excal to respond to a gold ring with a iron nail on top of it without the ring being masked out like other detectors do. You can find coins, jewelry and other targets right near iron. Some guys hunt in Pinpoint mode as this is All Metal and then switch to disc to see if it is iron. Low conductive targets give a low growl tone and higher ones give a high tone.

If you hunt in the discriminate mode, iron targets are "nulled", as you refer to, turned off. When passing over an iron target the Excalibur just goes to a blank tone as you pass over the iron. It's that simple and why the Excalibur is such a popular machine.

Sweep slow over nulls if there is a good target next to the iron and you are sweeping fast
while the detector is nulled from the iron you would have passed the good target
if you come off a null with a very low tone that was iron if you have a higher tone at all after a null
sweep very slow from all directions to see if you can separate out the good target or what is giving you the higher tone.

Great answer, that is how I hunt in an iron infested area that others ignore because of the nulling.
