Mini Balls And A Soldier’s Wedding Ring

Got out to hunt an area today where fighting took place during the Civil War. After finding several fired bullets I found a spot where I found 10 dropped mini balls (including a chewed one), all within a 8 foot circle. After I dug the chewed bullet I found a man’s brass wedding ring about a foot away. I’ve read that the soldiers would give their gold rings to their wives and wear brass ones in the field. Makes me wondered what happened at this spot.

It was an awful war, no question about it. Must have been some serious fighting
going on for someone to drop all those bullets.

Congratulations on a nice hunt. I have found the brass wedding bands as well. 2 of your bullets are Williams Type 3 often referred to as cleaner bullets. I have read that they were mixed in with the minies and the zinc base expanded to clean the rifle but that they caused problems and were discarded. At one of my sites most of the drops were Williams cleaners.

Thank you tnt-hunter. One of the Williams bullets was pulled, I’ve found many of them at this spot.

That ring belonged to a very small soldier or a very young one!!

Or maybe a soldier had lost his wife and carried her ring with him to the war.

The men were smaller in stature in the period, averaging 5' 7'', smaller shoulders and hands, living off a natural organic diet and a lean pantry, nothing like us heathens today.
