Minus 5 Degrees / Windchill 14 Below so far

We had a -4 this morning with no wind. I tried to open my garage door so I wouldn't have to walk down my frozen brick front steps to get the morning paper. Garage door frozen shut and the unit was still trying to open the door. I ran back, jumped up and unplugged the cord before it ground up the cheap plastic gears. Saved it this time. In 1976 had the same thing happen. Except I just stood there like an idiot while the plastic gears smoothed them selves flat. Had to buy a new unit. Broke the door free with gentle tugs from a crow bar. Any more of this Global Warming and my Hoo-Ha's are going to freeze off.

It was -1 here this morning. With the wind carrying on in spite of everything. Car started ok, but you could really tell the fluids were trying to turn to rock:)

For freezing pipes, simply leave a faucet slightly dripping. I do. Has never failed. When the pump kicks on, it knocks any ice crystals out of the pipes and the ground water is warmer than what was in the pipes, so they'll never freeze. No building is exempt from these kind of temperatures. I have a rental house and I texted the guy renting it before the freeze and asked him to keep the water dripping and of course he said ok. I guarantee you if there are busted pipes in the house this winter, it will be because he did not listen to me, AND the rent will go up next year. The pipes coming from the source to the delivery inside are susceptible to freezing.

Wow, I'd die in those temps. We had 1 day(25* low), but tomorrow willl be 60 and the next day 70's. About 45* now and kitty has the thermostat at 80* and a log in the fireplace. He's asleep on his rug and pretty happy...

It will be about 55 here Saturday. It's all about surviving until the weather gets more reasonable.

Animals should not be outside.
Children should not go outside.
Check on your elderly friends and family. I took a friend to the store. She has no car and would have walked instead.

And then when the weather gets more reasonable, we just have to worry about lightning and tornadoes! Good grief.

Man I really do feel for y'all, cause your winter is way more worse than mine so far, and I live in the central mountains in Colorado! I talked with my nephew down in McComb Mississippi this a.m. and it was 15 degrees there, which was only about 12 degrees warmer than us. Since he's lived his whole life in the deep South I had to give him some tips on keepin the water pipes from freezin up (too late on that one), checkin the antifreeze in the truck, and how to tell if you're gettin hypothermia. Maybe if it gets cold enough in the south, it will kill off all the ticks and chiggers, but I doubt it.

It would be nice if it killed off some of the deer ticks.

One reason I stopped hunting the dirt.....Looking better soon, hold onto that...

-7 here this morning, + 7 for a high.

Electric water buckets freezing over, 15 deer depending on me and my hammer.....lasts about 15 minutes.

Had to unload a semi at work, 50' roof st'l, took 2 fork lifts and some time to unload, frozen to the trailer....wind unbearable. I bundled up good, except for my cheeks. They were stinging for about 5 minutes...and then the pain went away, and they felt warm...Luckily I realized this was not good, made a scarf from a rag or I think they might have froze.

I love reading books about the Yukon and Alaskan gold rushes, those guys had much more severe weather to deal with, and no modern insulated clothes or boots. Can you imagine living in a tent, traveling across glaciers, taking care of a dog team when the temp is always below zero? Gives me a renewed respect for those old sourdoughs. :notworthy:

Look at the bright side, you dont live here

Summit Forecast – Tuesday, January 7, 2014
A strong westerly flow behind yesterday's cold front will bring in an Arctic air mass today, dropping temperatures through the day and into the overnight hours. A tight pressure gradient between the departing low and an incoming high will boost winds over the forecast period, with sustained winds nearing 100 mph and gusts well into the triple digits; especially this afternoon and overnight. With the cold air and high winds, frostbite on exposed skin can occur in less than 5 minutes; this includes dogs that you may take hiking with you. Therefore, a wind chill warning will remain in effect today through tomorrow. In addition to the cold and winds, favorable upslope conditions will bring continued snow showers through the day before gradually tapering into Wednesday.

I love reading those stories as well, it's almost like time travel. Can't imagine how those folks survived, much less thrived and hunted gold as well. One of my favorites is the story of the Donner party, in five months they crossed two deserts and three mountain ranges only to lose their race with winter by one day. Can't believe so many survived that hideous ordeal.

A big mystery to me has always been why an experienced mountain man like Jim Bridger told them the cutoff they were contemplating taking was, in his words, "A fine level road". When my wife complains that, "men never ask for directions" I always tell her that on the first American cross country highway, (the Oregon trail), the first men in American history to ask directions on a family trip was Mr Donner and Mr. Reed. They went into the first convenience store, (Fort Bridger) and got directions to California, and after what happened to them, men just quit asking for directions! :dontknow:

RJC, you need to come down off the mountain now it's waaaay to cold to be up there!
In Alaska they have electric heaters they hook up to the vehicle engines so they don't freeze and will start.

Good news !!!!!! We have a thaw coming!!!
It's 8 now but we're on the plus side yea! Today's high won't quite make above freezing but close!

And are you ready for this! ALL NEXT WEEK TEMPS WAY ABOVE FREEZING!!!!!!!!
PARRRRTY!!!!! Do'n the happy dance (be thankful there isn't video)!
YES I 'm going detecting!!!!!!!!! So happy so happy!

Hopefully this heat wave gets to all of you too!
No complaining "it's too hot" when the temp hits 45! Ok?

A fine level road just right for a wagon, sure footing for critters in addition. Maybe Bridger was not the one for inexperienced mountain travelers to ask, in addition to neglect on any ones part to ask about or mention character of snow in passes. (Snow impasse,s).

Two cold days here in Michigan have given way to a clear sun for a little bit. Been taking extra breaks shoveling . Ice in beard should be less as temp rises.Chair used to shovel grows frost bigtime on the handrails when back in the house.
With truck I have the snow to a average years level piled up all ready.

in the 80's I had one of these.

Dipstick Style Oil Heaters

I'd just put it where the oil dipstick goes overnight, Used to work Wonders.

Every once in awhile, like Now, I remember them.
But last time I asked at an auto parts store they didn't have any.

I guess now that Computers Exist I'll have to see about doing some Shopping :laughing7:

hmm dipstick heaters were outlawed in canada due to engine fires.
But they are still sold in USA.

Jeff, I had a headache yesterday too from the cold.
Some type of steam heat would have been safer for an engine I guess, wonder if any inventions are going to come out of this cold snap, err...deep freeze?

RCJ ya the weather on Mt Washington gets real interesting at times. I wouldn't want to be one of the people that mans the weather station up there, ya need anti- freeze in your veins for that job!
We took the mother-in-law up there one summer, clouds descended and a 50 mph wind. We step off the train her head scarf blows off & she starts to chase it off in the cloud fog till I grabbed her arm & explained the terrain to her! Bought her another scarf. What you don't know can kill you!

It was colder than ten-day-old-poo in Alaska. I am still not warm, yet. I also came down with a bit of a cold. I am fighting it right now. I am full of meds and have way too much drainage.

Me too, man. Doctor said the amount of drainage and cough at night was Swine flu and not a cold. No meds I found would touch it. Two weeks and just starting to ease up a bit.

And here I sit complaining because it is 51 and drizzling rain in San Antonio, Texas at 5:20PM

Jeff, I can get you a core heater when I go visit my daughter In Canada in the spring. Just let me know. They are mandatory almost up there.
