I HAVE ADDED ADDITIONAL DETAILED PICS 8/23- FARTHER DOWN IN THE THREAD

Hello Everyone,

This is a classic example of "they hit you when you least expect it".
I was digging with my buddy Kenny this morning. He had a spot in a neighboring county that he had hit before, but had come up empty-handed. We decided to give his spot a try and drove out there.

We drove up a very long lane that had wheat stubble and waist high weeds on one side and on the other side of the lane was a field that only had the outside rounds worked. (bare dirt)

We hit the weedy side first (that's where the old house and barns used to stand) and after 15 or so minutes of being unable to swing a coil in that mess, we decided to try the other side of the road and swing over bare dirt. Signals were few and far between - and when we did get a signal, it ended up being old shell casings.

Since we weren't having much success, I suggested we may have to go to the local park and settle for some coinshooting. Kenny agreed and said,"Let me dig this signal first." I was no more than 10 feet away from him and got a signal, too. Kenny said, "I've got a washer". I told him, "Let me dig this signal it's probably a washer, too."

Two and a half inches deep and caked with dirt, I pulled out what I was certain was a very large washer. However, the "center" didn't budge when I tried to poke it though. Keep in mind this thing was completely covered in dirt.

I've had my heart broken numerous times by large washers pretending to be something else. I asked Kenny, "What the hell is this?" Committing the cardinal sin, I carefully brush away a tiny bit of dirt and saw some writing. This is NOT a washer. This is NOT a big-assed token. This is a large coin. My heart skipped a beat when I realized how heavy it weighed in my hand. "Could it be? Have I found my very first large silver?"

Indeed, I had. An 1879 Morgan Silver Dollar. After a few war-whoops and a few expletives, I carefully wrapped it up and brought it home to share with my fellow T-Netters.

I think I owe my buddy Kenny a beer or two for allowing me to hunt this site.

And to think...we were just about ready to leave...

It's true...."they hit you when you least expect it".

HH Everyone,

Looked at the pics again. Hope you will consider using acetone to clean this, and post more pics. Acetone will not affect the patina, but will clean any organic debris. Something about the edge of this, plus maybe the "ONE DOLLAR" looks a little odd.

Tuberale - are you thinking this is a rare(r) variety/counterfit?
Any special precautions to be used with acetone?

I was going to say something along these lines, but was hoping someone else would pick up on it first. Pics are distorted in color which I think is lighting. Would like to see better ones to make my assumption. Coin does look somewhat odd.(edging and strike) I have a CFT. 1885 Morgan.

Re: My First BIG Silver - 1879 Morgan

Re: MODIFIED!! 1879 Morgan (UPDATED PICS)

Any way that you can weigh it?
It does look "funny", but honestly, if it is counterfeit, it's a real nice one.
Either way, sweet find.

Re: MODIFIED!! 1879 Morgan (UPDATED PICS)

Spacing and position of the letters in "one" look wrong. Striking looks to be soft, especially in the stars and rim. Almost looks like it's plated. Could be a well made Chinese CFT. When they made alot of these, they wanted them to look like they were worn and or, well circulated. Weight HAS to be 412 grains, (+or- 1/2 a grain), this would be the TRUE tell. Look at the scratches and dents. Is there another metal or composition showing? If it were 90% silver, even the scratches and dents, would appear as silver. Yours is all dark spots. Still..... can't tell from the pics. It's your lighting. The coin looks, not silvery, but flat grey. This could be from the camera or,(once again), lighting. Takes your pics in sunlight, outside, and repost. Still tough to tell, but personally, I think it's cft. Just doesn't look right. But I've been wrong before so....... :dontknow:

Re: MODIFIED!! 1879 Morgan (UPDATED PICS)

Im looking at the 1882 morgan i found last month , and it seems the 8 is lower than on mine here, an you can see the scratch on the eagle on the reverse is the same tone asthe coin , means the scatch was there before it was lost , if i had scratched it , it would be shiny

Re: MODIFIED!! 1879 Morgan (UPDATED PICS)

Thanks for thinking I know something about this that I really don't.

It just doesn't look authentic to me. The color of the metal showing is the main culprit. The dinks I can deal with, the interior metal discoloration I can't.

If the dark coloring doesn't come off with acetone applied with a Q-tip, then I'd vote for counterfeit. I think Indiana and Ohio both had lots of counterfeit silver dollars being made. But then, I'm not an expert either. I've never seen a coin that scratched before unless it was intentional: like you were supposed to see all the scratches and miss the obvious.

I'd agree the accurate weight would solve a lot of questions here.

That said, hope I'm wrong.
