In Southern California here we've got way too many detectorists. So I try to find the places that they avoid. I've found a landfill site just off the main highway and been there over a dozen times. So far I've pulled out quite a few interesting items. Each visit seems like it will be my last but I keep going back. It's isolated and huge and near the water with seagulls and shorebirds. Keeps me quite contented.
Well I stuck the DD coil onto my Fisher F4 and figured maybe I'll get down another inch or so. Lots of good signals but turning up as metal lipstick cases (I get 3 or 4 each hunt). metal compact cases and the ubiquitous copper rings that ring in as silver quarters.
I picked out this strange metallic object...rubbing gently I could see leaf impressions. Two round spots seemed to indicate something missing. So I put the object in my pouch and picked up a couple signals close by that were the missing items.
When I got home I could see those were elaborate flowers which broke apart into a ring of petals, a ring of stamen and a central bud. Apparently however they were joined corroded away. I figured these were probably copper items with a paint glaze but stuck them in my vinegar cleaning solution. A half hour later I could "smell" the silver getting cleaned. YEP! * S I L V E R *
Horribly dirty and with some corrosion but I was able to get it fairly clean (I think I'll stop here). I didn't photograph it dirty because I didn't think it was a good metal. The reverse has a stamping that says "IT SILVER" which I figure is Italian Silver?
!st photo is with all the pieces apart.
2nd photo assembled...now I have to figure how to repair it.
