Those are great examples of Plains Village artifacts, just beautiful! The Mandan, Hidatsa, Arikara, and other tribes in the Dakotas made the most beautiful bone items.

Fine collection larson 1951

The bone artifacts are very nice specimens and runtee has named the predominate northern Plains village tribes that made these fine artifacts.

ABSOLUTELY AWSOME! I like the carved mammoth the best. Those guys died out quite a while ago, so that dates to ice age and may have been a cherished toy passed down for generations or a ceremonial piece. to be able to hold something like that in your hand...all i can say is wow.

nice finds. thanks for sharing.

Lamplighter36, Are you talking about the grey chert piece?
I always thought it was an effigy of something
Can you please tell me more about this if you have any more info?
Thanks Much

I must say, those pieces deserve a Banner!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!..........sweet

hmm.. maybe the mammoth was from the clovis culture possibly handed down thousands of years to the more modern historic Indian which presumably made these bone artifacts. Very Nice.

Dear relix, I am not sure what you mean ?
should I post a few more images of that piece?
I was really trying to figure out if it is (or was) meant to be an effigy
I showed this to another native american friend and the first thing they said was "tatonka"
I am posting this to get opinions as I am not an expert
Are you serious with your opinion?
I thank you in advance for the favor of a reply
Once again, I appreciate all the help from this very informative website
Sincerely, Steve

Hi Larson...you have a really nice set of artifacts. In one of the cases I noticed two metal points, were these found in association with the bone items? One would think that there should be some glass beads there somewhere or the bone items predate the metal points. Do you find any pottery in the field? Just trying to figure things out.

Very nice assortment of fine relics Larson.

That rib bone on the far right, looks like it is an ice glider, probably right around 5 1/2 inches long, pointy on one end, and cut of straight on the other.

Thanks for showing those fine pieces.

Are you in the Dakota's? I am.

Joel

yes quito I was born in south dakota

I am in eastern SD near Sioux Falls. Again, those are some mighty fine pieces you have acquired there.

I was born in Mobridge SD
Our farm had granite rock circles measuring from 5 feet in diameter to 15 feet,
But the small 5 footers were most common with only afew of the large ones
I never found even one artifact by these circles these circles were found on the hilly parts where we kept the cows and sheep(not on the flat)
Does any one out there know what these could have been???
I would appreciate any opinions
The granite rocks wer average size of a bowling ball with some smaller and some bigge
Thanks in advance for any help on this

The effigy seems that it has a snout similiar to that of the mammoth. 'Tatonka', being a buffalo wouldn't have had a snout I do not believe, although I could be wrong. I was just trying to figure out how this unique piece would have been crafted by a much newer Indian that crafted the bone artifacts. The only thing I can seem to come up with is that it was passed down a few thousand years or was from a completely different culture that occupied the same site. I found a turtle effigy once at a site along with bone artifacts, but these people had saw turtles. I've found there is most always an explanation. Nice artifacts by the way . : )

Those circles sound interesting Larson. Likely fire rings and tepee rings I'd think. From Mobridge eh? I used to go out with a girl from your neighborhood........... Java.

I bought a collection from guy from Mobridge years ago. Lots of very nice pieces.

My Honey-moon ended in Mobridge S.D.,...But I did find a few nice points and a few nice walleye,.. soooo all in all ,..

Still paying on that one !! Blindpig

Quito, my grandpa lived by Java
pretty cool
