To wet to detect today. So does anyone have an idea on this old find. The length is approx 1.5 inch (can't find a tape measure). It says MATER.DEI+ M . Mater, Dei, translates to Mother of God. I think it's Medieval, but also been told it may be Christian Roman.

Robert.

Never heard of a metal Medieval spoon. You make have put the European use of the metal spoon back into the 10th century instead of the 14th!

The use of metal spoons goes back way before the 10th century...

Hi CoilyGirl, No just ploughed fields, pature fields and woods. I did though once look on the Thames foreshore (eyes only), across from the tower of London. The place was absolutely covered in pottery of all ages. I think you need a license, to mudlark there.

Yes there are some pretty stringent rules for mudlarking. We are going in September and I'm going to try and go to the foreshore just to see if I can just eyeball something. I would be happy with just pipe stems and pottery bits.
