Today was my day to get out. Holiday with the fam is important and next week looks like a deep freeze will put an end to the fun.

But at least I made it count. I started off at an old site and pulled a sweet Waterville pocket knife. The target sounded like a iron and non-ferrous blob, and that’s what it was.

I didn’t look it up but my best guess is civil war era or slightly earlier.

So I decided to take a trip all the way across town to a new site I’d researched but never got a chance to visit. It was a bit difficult to pinpoint but then I got a great signal - ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1514140748.216229.webp turned out to be a draped bust.

I wandered around and found a great section. Out pops a bunch of flat buttons and another 3 coppers.

It was a great day and I’m sure there’s more there. The wife wanted me home by noon so I guess it’ll be the spring before I make it back. Here are the uncleaned pics - I’m away and my laboratory is back in NJ...

I think this is it for my season. Jersey is supposed to get a deep freeze and Eastern LI is likely to do the same, so that means I’m stuck.

Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas.

Good hunts

Great finds, love those large cents! Draped bust is cool. Nice buttons also. That 1820 LC looks great. Glad you got out, I’m a little farther north than you but not by much and that cold front is gonna hit us. Probably last day for detecting for awhile, well for me anyway. Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays to you and your family.

Happy holidays Scraps!

The coppers look good now, I want to see them after you clean them up.

Yes it did this time. This year my research was roughly 3-5% successful. I needed this

CONGRATS ON THE FINDS! research is a tough game.....

Wow! What an awesome hunt. IHP's, dandies, LC's (that one is in truly great dug condition) and the old Mercury lock has a cool design. Did I see in one of your responses that your research only paid off 3-5% of the time? I guess those 3-5% sites are wildly productive with what I have seen you post this year. My research probably lead me into the woods at 40 different sites this year. 4 were truly great sites 10 were OK one or two visit sites and the rest were duds. Congrats!

Yeap, looks like a good new site you found just before year end. We were pleased to find 3 this year, not easy, as you know.

Congrats on some great old buttons and coppers Steve. Looks like you waved the checkered flag on your last hunt of the year !!

Great finds! Thanks for posting them the coppers I find are almost all slick or nearly so.

The nice one I found in sandy soil a bit away from the home location. In my experience coastal sandy soil is rather gentle on copper.

Now that's the way to take advantage of an opportunity. That's a load of coppers and I like that dandy button. Merry Christmas to you and your family; us Southern boys will try to keep the relics posts coming during the next two or three months. 8-)

Thanks Glen - merry Christmas back at ya! Please keep us entertained. We just got an inch of sleet on Eastern Long Island this morning. Hahahahahhaaaaaa!

Great digs!! Can’t beat a pile of coppers any day! That 1820 is a stunner, congrats!

You have to love the coppers you just wipe off and bam.....

But they’re so few and far in between. Merry Christmas

Yeah, I apologize for that man - it was insensitive of me to post this stuff. You’re always welcome in NJ but I think that’s a moot point now...

thats not bad for woods, they don’t freeze. It’s not until there’s a foot of snow on top on top then you’re screwed, like me:BangHead:

is that pocketknife brass? I love that old lock,I don’t find many! Can you get a year off that dB? I love that design on the dandy button! Research goes a long way sometimes, sometimes a crap shoot. About 1 in 3 worked out ,like the last one. I’m in research mode now, unless we get a thaw in January. Maybe it’ll be like a few years ago where it’ll start to melt in February.Awesome finds man:occasion14:

That they are! Merry Christmas!

Going out in a blaze of glory. Maybe this winter will be as mild as last years. Congrats to you Scrappy.

Great way to put an exclamation point on the year. The knife is definitely CW period. I have one similar that I found on a CW site and I have seen others come out of CW camps. I wish the LCs I found today looked like those.

I remember seeing a lot of discussion in the past about these particular style knives and their age. Some hairs were split about whether they were pre-civ or civ war period. Any way you SLICE it, it’s sounds good to me. The ones I usually find with brass sides are usually “popped” from the internal rust pressure, so this one is a survivor. Thanks for the confirmation on age buddy. Cheers!

Thanks DD, Merry Christmas to you and yours as well. May we all have belated gifts that are found in da ground! Hahah

Great finds. Coppers, pfft! That’s golden. Great job.

That’s great! Your averages are much better than mine. Here’s another one - I’ve only found two (seemingly) untouched sites, probably 0.1%. Lol. Cheers

Great finds, congrats! :occasion14:

Some nice vergin ground.. nice finds

Yeap, looks like a good new site you found just before year end. We were pleased to find 3 this year, not easy, as you know.

Interestingly, my best sites were never on any map. They were found from satellite images, topographic maps, sight, or from text. Everyone around here has the readily and commonly accessible maps, which usually means they’re thoroughly detected. Perhaps there are a few areas where there are no detectorists, thus making the common map route effective, but that’s very rare. That said, your 3 is really impressive considering the age of your sites and the (almost) non-existent visual indicators.
