I thought I'd share this with you guys, kinda crazy...My bank mgr. called and said "we took in some old Silver Dollars today you need to come over and check 'em out" I took my loop, scale, magnet and a couple of real Silver Dollars with me. The teller that took them in was thinking of me at the time....It only took a few seconds to see that they were counterfeit. Weight was 19g and the magnet picked them up besides the funky details. The poor teller felt bad :unhappysmiley: So I offered the mgr. the $34.00 dollars that they paid out for the 34 coins and brought them home. So now what to do with them...? I'm going to give some to my coin collector friends because they would not be able to buy "Real Ones". And then I'm thinking when I'm out detecting with my buddies I might just drop one here and there, to catch the reaction:laughing7:

good thinking, the bank doesn't lose and they will call you again

I think the are cool. I will double your money if you send them my way.

Very cool still!

My bank called me today too, something about insufficient funds?!? :icon_scratch: ;)

Interesting get! :)

Well you got them off the street anyway. Better mark them CFT so you don't get in trouble for counterfeiting

wow - you would think given "bank protocol" - they wouldn't be able to sell you counterfeits - like they would have to be destroyed or something....

Hey for $34 bucks why not

Even though they are counterfeit, those are really cool!!

That 1878 ...thing... in the middle there, what were they thinking? Not even close to the real one!

I'd stamp each and everyone with a "Sorry about the heart attack, cordially, Wildcarrot"
Or something to that effect.
Then go a-planting!
Nice that you got the teller out of a scrape, wondering if the bank contacted the authorities.
That could still be considered passing counterfeit currency.
Yep, mark em and plant them!
Carl

i would be interested to find out the circumstances of how the bank acquired them.

Call me paranoid but this isn't something I'd post online lol. Counterfeit is counterfeit and I doubt the authority's would care if it was in good faith. Surprised the bank sold them because I'm sure they broke at least 1 federal law.

Amazing what people would do (e.g risk) for $34 buck (not wildcarrot but the person who scammed the bank) - a federal offense for $34? Gotta be a smarter way I would think...meh

Pretty cool or not. I have a friend that bought some silver dollars from a roadside stand. He paid $5 a piece for 30 of them. Brought them to me to brag and I pull out the magnet and destroy his dreams. He learned a good lesson though. The hard way.....

Nice deal, but I don't know if I would want to be holding on to those or not.

I agree. I don't think a bank is allowed to disburse money that is known to be counterfeit.

So are those old counterfeits or modern? If old ones the person turning them into the bank may not have known, and it was a one time event, Feds would be more likely interested in an on going operation.

In response to a few of the comments and requests on this post I thought I'd put this up. These coins are not for sale or trade. As I said in the original post I'm going to have some fun with them.

Wonder how long it will take you to convince the finders that their coin is not real....and how fast can you run?:mad::D
