Had a late afternoon metal detecting hunt in Lebanon, PA tonight. Found my best looking 1700s coin - a 1757 King George II half penny. The small brass item is a rein terret.

UPDATE: Well I thought it was 1757 but after research there wasn't a 57. It is either a 1737 or a 1747.

The V did change to U but was back to V in 47. It's the younger bust, only dates 1729 to 1739 so unless the last digit is 9 there's no question about the date.

1757 does exist, but are counterfeits and quite rare, and to find one metal detecting would be incredibly rare. For these all the rules go out the window.

To the naked eye, it looks like a 5. But it certainly could be something else. I agree that it looks like the younger bust version.

Nice detail on that KG, maybe 1 in 10 will be that nice.

Great find and wonderful condition!

Not uncommon for a 5 to look like a 3, or the other way around, on a coin with some condition issues.... heck even on some great condition ones people can be fooled... I've seen examples. There's really no question it's 1737 because that is a very genuine looking bust and would not at all match what would be expected if it was a counterfeit and any other number as the 3rd digit. I guess you could say it's like process of elimination, only I guess it's inclusion, because everything says 1737.

Congratulations on the old copper find!

Nice KGII there. 1737. Congrats. Any time you can dig one with a legible date is a good day.
