Here are the updated pics of the "Model 1860". It took me a couple of days to clean it but I think it came out pretty good. After I cleaned it I picked it up and held it. WOW ;D what a feeling. It is incredible to think that the last person to hold this sword was 140 years ago and they were fighting in the Civil War. It is an awesome feeling being able to hold a peice of history like this...

The first two shots are the before, the next two are actual color of the sword cleaned, the whole shot looks all gold but it is just the lighting. (one day I will get good at photography)

Re: My best find ever, and in an unusual spot.

Lamont…HOLY COW!, nice work!
Just under the grass eh? Wow, I bet you darn near fouled your armor!
I believe what you have there is a US Model 1860 Field Officer’s sword of the
“high grade”.
Circa mid 1800's, they were based on a french design:

Thanks for the person who put up that site, it has some great pics!

Nice work Lamont!

Way to go Lamont!!! You're not gonna put that in your scrap metal pile are you??
Found it just under the leaves ?!?!? Do you need to borrow my leaf blower???

Re: My best find ever, and in an unusual spot.

I'm amazed the blade bent instead of breaking. very nice find.

Nice Job, That is a nice relic.

Re: My best find ever, and in an unusual spot.

One can only imagine the circumstances that lead to the sword being bent. An officer on horseback, being struck by a musketball in the heat of a Civil War skirmish, falls to the ground, his sword crumpling underneath his weight?

Of course, it could also be that the sword was simply dropped, and later run over by several pickup trucks and farm tractors. But that is a lot less fun to imagine.

Unbelievable find!! I know a guy here in Va. who does restoration work if you're interested, let me know. Congrats!!

Re: My best find ever, it almost cut my toes off....

Thanks for all the posts. I still look at it and can't believe it has been laying there for a 140 years or so. I wish it had a book with it to tell me the story about how it got there and why it was bent that way. I think I will keep it in its present condition as a story piece...

Re: My best find ever, it almost cut my toes off....

Awesome find. I wouldn't trade that one for one in mint condition. Think of the history...WOW!

WOW :o

There's got to be a way to straighten that out and then have it cleaned up..any display case would be proud to house that, even one in a museum!

Nice find

Just image that, how many years? No one notice that item till you found it. You are very lucky!
