At the age of 16,working with carpenters building base housing at Forbes AFB,one of them told me that if I understand two things,I'll make it in life.
(1)Why is there never enough time to do a job right the first time, but always enough time to do it over?
( I took it to mean that quality out weighs deadlines and saves money,is what I understood later)
(2)If you never do more than you get paid for, you'll never get paid for more than you do.
(Without initiative,you'll never advance)
I've always remembered this and it has always proved to be true and have passed it on to my kids.
BTW-when I was working there,1951,I was unloading lumber from boxcars and carrying lumber to the carpenters. This was in 120 degree Kansas summer heat and ! was earning better than a $100 a week which was excellent at that time. When the water truck came ,I always made sure that all the workmen got their drink first before me,this earned me even more respect. They knew I was just there for the summer and then back to school in KC.
